Bios Problem I think. HELP
Could someone please help me?
I need a bios upgrade for my computer and I can' find one. Heck I don't even know anything about the bios. I thought I was very familiar with computers until now. I have replaced harddrives, power supplies, added ram and have fixed problems within the operating system. But when it comes to the bios I don't have a clue. I ran Sysspec and my details are listed below. Windows: Windows XP5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.2180 Memory (RAM): 512 MB CPU Info: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz CPU Speed: 2390.4 MHz Sound card: Vinyl AC'97 Audio (WAVE) Display Adapters: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 | NetMeeting driver | RDPDD Chained DD Screen Resolution: 1024 X 768 - 32 bit Network: Network Present Network Adapters: VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter - Packet Scheduler Miniport CD / DVD Drives: D: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8162B | E: HL-DT-STCD-RW GCE-8523B | F: SONY DVD RW DW-D26A COM Ports: COM1 | COM2 LPT Ports: LPT1 Mouse: 5 Button Wheel Mouse Present Hard Disks: C: 74.6GB Hard Disks - Free: C: 62.3GB USB Controllers: 4 host controllers. Firewire (1394): Not Detected PCMCIA (Laptops): Not Installed Manufacturer: Phoenix Technologies, LTD Product Make: AC Power Status: OnLine BIOS Info: AT/AT COMPATIBLE | 10/02/02 | VIAP4X - 42302e31 Time Zone: Atlantic Standard Time Battery: No Battery Motherboard: AV49 Modem: Not detected : I am hoping my problem is just a bios upgrade..My computer shuts down and restarts when it is booting, before I get to the windows screen. If I'm lucky enough to be able to load windows I can work for a while and the computer will just shut down and try to restart again. I reformatted the hard drive, but I am still having the same problem.

Re: Bios Problem I think. HELP
Hello and welcome to TSF
![]() I doubt your problem is bios releated; however with computers anything is possible most likely your trouble is either / cpu overheating or memory errors of voltage problem but if you want to update with the bios we can ? you would be better off waiting until you get the system stable before you try updating your bios / if your computer shutsdown during a bios update you will be left with a system that wont do anything until you buy a new bios chipbefore we head down that road / lets some some "other" stuff first A) download memtest / its dos bootable and will check your memory for errors without needing to boot into windows here is the floppy disk version: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d1247.html here is the cd-rom version: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html B) check in your system bios and verify what the temperature of the CPU is and also report your system voltages C) you can also test your hard drive with this bootable CD >>>> open your computer and verify who is the manufacturer of your boot drive >>> then run the diagnostic according to the drive manufacturer ?? http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ from within the Ultimate boot CD you can run "CPU Burn In" that will show your cpu temps >>>> check your temps when you first run the program give us a shout if you need help with any of these / and give us the results of your diangostic troubleshooting best regards joe
