Question [SOLVED] Problem with my newly built Computer

I'm recently new to the computer building field, in my life I've always been interested in computer building and last week I finally pinched enough money together to buy a great gaming pc, the info of what I have is this:

Power supply - eXtreme Power Duo 600W (CoolerMaster)
Video card - Diamond HD 2400 Pro
Motherboard - Asus P5K-E
Hard drive - Maxtor Sata II/300
CPU - Intel Duo Core 2 inside
Framecase - CoolerMaster Elite 330
RAM - Kingston DDR 2 (2gb)
Operating system - Windows Xp Professional

I put it all together fine, wired fine, and all-together fit nicely. After I finished I plugged in everything my computer needs, and decided to put all of its software on it. At first, my computer's DOS would come up, I'd press a key and then it would bring up a message "CPU fan error" now I decided on well I must have done something wrong, when I was about to turn off the computer, It turned itself off, I thought that made sense if there was an error. Now my CPU's heatsink fan spun when it turned on and everything but I found I put the power supply cord from it in the wrong 4-pronged pin area so I switched it to the right one, which fixed that error message from coming up again. So now I'm thinking, okay well NOW I can put its software on. I turn it back on, pop in my operating system disc, and after 2% through it's job, the computer shuts off again. Now at this point im wondering if its my heatsink again, I check it again and there doesnt seem to be any problems with it. So I retry this whole thing again, and it did the same thing again. Any suggestions of why my computer keeps turning itself off??

I've never built a computer before this so I'm not sure if I need to install other software before my Operating System.

any suggestions or help would be much appreciated. ( ) Thank you

Re: Problem with my newly built Computer

Tell us what you used for a thermal solution between the CPU and heatsink. Also, are you certain that the CPU clamp is down tightly? Did you connect the +12 molex to the motherboard? Can you get in to the bios setup menu and check the temperatures and voltages, and if so, post them here.

Re: Problem with my newly built Computer

I'm not sure what this solution is, but its Blue'ish gray. adn came on the heatsink already. Im not sure what that other device thing you said is, and the CPU frame is down tightly.

Ill go check now to see what those temps are for you.

p.s - thank you

Okay, got everything from the check

Temperature

CPU temp - slowly rose, but after hitting 85 degrees C it stopped

MB Temp - 18 degree C, but was at 21 degrees after I finished writing everything down

CPU fan speed - 1906

Chasis fan speeds - N/a

Voltage

V core - 1.245

3.3v - 3.344

5v - 5.112

12v - 12.04v

Re: Problem with my newly built Computer

The problem you most likely have is that your thermal solution is not put on properly. I suggest you get some Artic Silver and redo that paste correctly.

Here are Artic Silver Instructions

YOu have to clean off the old before you put on new, so please follow those directions very carefully and that should help you a lot IMHO. Pay close attention to the comments about how much you put on, because too much can be as bad or worse than not enough.

What happens in this instance (well, that is what I think) is that your paste is not on correctly or that factory thermal pad (they are not very good) is not doing the job, so your computer just keeps heating up until it gets too hot and shuts down to prevent your CPU from burning up. I would not try to run it any longer until you get that issue taken care of.

Re: Problem with my newly built Computer

When you get a chance write back and let us know if you changed the thermal paste or was it something else. We always like to know so we can help someone else with the same problem.

Have a great evening and post back when you get a chance. Oh, don't be a stranger on here, stick around and enjoy the forum.
