Red Faced [SOLVED] Slow Overheating CPU help needed

My computer has been having some really bad problems lately that i cannot fix. I would really like to know if there is still some hope for my computer before i a) reformat is completely or b) buy a new one.

System Info:
ORIGINAL:
Computer Build: eMachines T3882
CPU: Intel Celeron D 335 (2.8Ghz)
Internet: Good DSL
ADDED:
VisionTek ATI Radeon X1300 Video Card
2 GB of RAM

My computer SUCKS!!! I can't even play Counter-strike (Half Life 1) without it lagging horribly. I have had this computer for 3-4 years now and recently it has been acting worse than usual. My CPU have been overheating on occasion causing my computer to shut down. I have heat-sink and a fan on it, and when I touch my heat-sink.... It's so hot it burns. Also sometimes when my computer is off all night when i first start it up I can play any game on the highest graphics with no lag whatsoever, but withing 2-5 minutes it slows down to unplayable.

Please help me I have tried everything. I can't underclock/overclock because that part of my system BIOS is grayed out and unreachable. I have tried register fixing programs. I am pretty sure its my CPU.

EDIT: I may have posted this in the wrong area of the forums, if so can somebody move this to the correct place, ty.

Re: Slow Overheating CPU help needed

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I would check for any dust around the CPU or just in the case in genreally and use compress air to clean it out. Also check that the fan does come on when it should come on. You should no let the computer get too hot as it can damge something inside.

You can also download speedfan http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php and use that to keep track of the tempature of the computer.

and yes this is more in the wrong area, more of the CPU section would be better i think, but just check that the fans are clean and still spin when they are suppose to.

Re: Slow Overheating CPU help needed

A bigger heatsink and fan would definetly help, are usually are cost efficient, also the lag could be to do with the servers your playing on, or your isp could be playing up.

Re: Slow Overheating CPU help needed

My CPU is running at about 100C right now. I have dusted it but I think their may be extra dust beneath the fan that I can't get to, but i will try again. It is not the servers I am going to because my ping is amazing and it does this on non-online games also.

My fan on my processor is running at about 4330RPM.

Re: Slow Overheating CPU help needed

Get your self some thermal paste (Artic Silver 5 is a good brand $12). remove the heatsink and scrap off all the original thermal paste from the heatsink and the CPU and apply the new paste. Spread the new paste with a piece of card so that the top of the CPU is covered and stick the heatsink back on (you only need a paper thin layer of paste).
This should bring the temps back down.
The temp needs to be about 50c-65c for normal CPU operation.

Great to here that,
Dust is the number 1 killers of PC's. I would say every 2-4 months give it a good clean out.
Someone will mark the thread as solved as soon as they can.

Good Luck.

Re: Slow Overheating CPU help needed

For dust, can of compressed air works well, and they are cheap. If you have a air compressor that would work too, just dont let it put out too much air pressure.
