New Build Crashes when loading cd/dvd
All:
Today I upgraded my old Desktop with the following components. The box was rebuilt and worked great that is until loading software. Purchased: MSI K9N6SGM-V AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard SAPPHIRE 100172-64L Radeon X1550 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Brisbane 2.2GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory System boots great, fast perfect. We formatted the HD, and began to load Windows XP Home. Loaded fine, went to load MB Drivers and the sytem locked, only way to use CD and DVD drive was to be in safemode. In safemode we were unable to use the MB Driver CD, wouldn't find drivers. Loaded the contents of the CD to the Harddrive. Still no luck. Did a complete reformat of the HD, went to preload Win 98 then upgrade to XP. Win 98 crapped out after 95 % of loading. In safe mode DVD and CD drivers are there and work fine. Is a conflict of hardware, settings or software? My CD and DVD Drives are pretty old. Is an upgrade in order? Thanks for any help in advance. Scott |

Re: New Build Crashes when loading cd/dvd
How do you have the jumpers set on your drives? Make sure they are either Master and Slave with the Master (MA) at the end of the ribbon cable and the Slave (SL) in the middle or both set to Cable Select (CS) If using CS make sure you are using an 80 conductor ribbon cable. Like the one used with newer IDE hard drives.
If the different jumper settings doesn't solve the problem then try each drive by themselves, to verify it's not a drive issue. Post back with your results. |
