Updating to Vista

Hi. Recently i built a new computer for gaming and 3d Animation reasons. The thing is, I have DX10 video card but i cant run DX10 due to the fact that i don't have windows Vista. I'm interested in Updating to windows vista, but several people have told me that vista demands a lot for power. I was wondering if my computer currently meets specs for me to be able to run windows vista problem free with my games and software. Also, i have lots of school data and such from my 3d programs that would probably be lost, any way to keep that old data without having to put it all on dvd or external HDD?

Specs:
CPU: AMD anthlon 64 X2 Dual 6000+
Motherboard: Infinity NF ULTRAII-M2
Ram: 2.00 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA 8800 GTS
HardDrive: 180 GB
OS: Windows XP
Power Supply: 450w

Re: Updating to Vista

I believe that your system, as is would run Vista, but if you built it just for DirectX 10 gaming you should add more memory. Vista(64bit) will benefit more from the added memory than XP(32bit). Run this program, Vista Upgrade Advisor

Re: Updating to Vista

You should run vista fine however you should upgrade your power supply before you damage your system see the psu info link in my sig.

I would dissagree. I'm using 2gb of ram and there's not a game my system won't play.
2 gb is all you need for gaming at this moment in time.

Ohh. your pc will run vista fine but be prepared for fps drops in some games. I personally wouldnt bother moving from xp yet.

Re: Updating to Vista

If 3D design is your bag then DON'T move up to Vista. When I was using Vista Ultimate I found only ONE of my 3D programs worked out of about 5 I use regularly. I couldn't accept an 80% failure rate so I reverted back to XP and have been happy since. You can happily and easily install and use up to 3GB of RAM with XP which is good for games and perfect for designing.

Ive recent been having random crashes during my games this last week. Could this be due to my power supply.
