Overheating

I have a computer that has been overheating really bad. It's been having the CPU go to almost 90C!

It sounds the alarm siren that it's overheating, but I've never had this problem before. I moved about 3 months ago, and that's when the problems began. I have added another fan, and a HDD fan in order to help, but neither has done anything.

I have not changed, nor modified anything since the move, what could be the problem?

The Computer is a:

Intel P4 3.0GHz
1 GB DDR RAM
HD1: 500 GB HD
HD2: 200 GB HD
DVD+/-RW
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 256MB

Present Computer Temps (For the most part Idle, and temps from MBM) are:
Case: 40C
CPU 88C (Ranges from about 74-90C)

From SpeedFan:
HDD: 49C
Misc: 50C

Re: Overheating

Hello and welcome to the TSF, sounds like the cpu heat sink shifted in the move, you should remove the heat sink and clean off the old thermal paste and reapply some new....see the link below on thermal paste, the bottom of the artical links to the AS5 website with instructions on how to apply if you need it. I reccomend you use Artic Silver 5, thermal paste....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835100007

I've pulled it and placed it back into place, and it still gives me the same problem, but the paste might be the problem, I've just never really put too much importance to it before. I bought the top of the line, back when I made it.

But is there something else that might be affecting it. I re-set the heatsink when I was cleaning it out with an air can... and it helped, but not enough to cure the problem.

Thanks.

Re: Overheating

whenever the heatsink is disturbed you need to clean off the paste and apply new
