Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

im confused weather what the difference is between a refurbished product that has never come out of the box and a new product. Why are they considered refurbished if they are new. Is it a warrenty thing?

Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

I'm not sure, as I stay away from refurbished products... it's probably just titled refurbished because it was an open box sort of like you get discounts at a store for open boxed items.. the refurbished items I normally seen were faulty items, but got the fault corrected.

anyhow...
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 - $280 free 3day shipping

GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128048 $149, not free shipping
Support for DDR3 1066/800 MHz memory modules Support for DDR2 1066/800/667 MHz memory modules
-will put you at about $30 under $500 with shipping added in on the two.-

Western Digital Caviar RE WD2500YS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136055 $75
-note no SATA cable included, needs to be purchased seperately, also not free shipping

PSU - power supply unit... the thing you plug your power cable into and distributes the power to your computer.
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS ATX12V / EPS12V 600W Power Supply 100 - 240 V CB, CE, CSA, UL, FCC - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817339003 normally don't suggest OCZ, but with the rebate and the free shipping, 600W @ 80% efficiency is pretty good deal for $70

for the case, just do a little research and keep an eye on the fans included and the number of extra fans that can be added to it... main factor of finding a case is not appearance but cooling efficiency.. appearance is just a bonus.

for ram, prices change all the time, you said you would be purchasing some other time so we'll have a look then.

LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD Burner - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106057 $35, does not include shipping... this includes SATA cable. a lot of them don't, which could make up for the few bucks difference.. price was at $28 when I bought this particular one last month... but newegg raises prices depending on how many wish lists an item is on, and that award might have raised it.

EVGA 512-P3-N801-A1 GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130296 $260, no free shipping

so without RAM and a case...
$984 before rebate... $969 with rebate... + shipping for all

you did not factor in cdrom/dvdrom, harddrive, and psu to your calculations... which add a little bit.
if you have cdrom/dvdrom to use as well as a harddrive then that can be deducted... though i can pretty much guarantee you will need a larger PSU than you have.
you said you were willing to go an extra hundred on the cpu/mobo so maybe that can go towards the PSU. to make a total price range of $1100?
don't forget about a case though, they range from 70-120 for pretty good cases.

Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

if i put all of the products in to existing case wouldn't need a hard drive or Dvd rom drive but if everything i am buying basically makes up a new tower and it really doesnt cost much more to just house them into a new case maybe i should, then i could have two pc's, my existing case might over heat without extra fans, is that true?
The only thing is i am pretty sure i could replace all the existing products myself but as far as puting a new tower together i might be in need of some sort of instuction manual or would it be possible to get newegg to put it together for a fee if i bought everything from them and got it shipped out assembled. I would need to buy a new operating system to if i made a new tower up. I am pretty good with my hands so with a instrution guide i am sure i could put it together. 75 for a new hard drive seems like a really good deal would probably be a good idea regradless if new tower or not.
I guess the main thing i have to decide is weather to do it as a upgrade or to make a new tower. The i can start the buying stage, what do you think about it?

Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

Hello mellyo1,

Have a look around at this site, I have found there prices very reasonable in the past and there delivery is also great. All the stuff i have ordered from them has been shipped via courier and shipping rates are very reasonable also.
Be aware tho your 5/600 dollar budget will not stretch as far in Australia.

I would be looking towards the items Linderman has selected mainly due to value for money and also your budget restraints.
I have cursed a few times about not being able to order from newegg. They have some very good deals and a good selection. They have told me they might consider shiping to ozz in the future but thats no real consolation.

also be aware that there are a lot of traps when buying a power supply, I know for a fact that linderman and some others have worked very hard in narrowing down and identifying power supply's that actually offer what they advertise. I would seriously consider drawing on the expertise that hides behind his keyboard. With that and some of the suggestions waxxed has put forth I am sure you can get the most out of your budget.

Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

thank you blackduck and linderman. if i purchased the motherboard and power supply listed above could i still put the quad core cpu and is the quad core cpu worth putting in, is there that much better performance from a quad core. Can i use my existing power supply or would i need one of the ones listed above to use the new motherboard and cpu.

Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

im all confused between cpus and still not sure what the difference in actual performance is between the barton core, the duo and the quad core. Could someone please help me tell the difference in performance. I was going to buy the quad core to make sure that i got the best performance but is there that much difference?

You guys seem to know alot about computers how did you learn so much about computers. I am very interested in computers and i would love to learn more about them. What would you suggest as a starting point?

Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

I have learned mostly from just building them / reading & discussing building in this forum. its not something you learn overnite, but you will pick it up fast.

on to your questions

the Intel dual core conroe cpus are very fast and will be noticeably faster than your barton core. The quad core is a great cpu but it the software really hasnt come of age yet to fully use four cores.

yes the motherboard and psu we listed will let you upgrade to the quad core later as you desire

no; the board we listed is not DDR3 compatible / DDR3 at this time offers nothing over DDR2 except insane prices to buy DDR3 memory

you 80 gig drive will be fine to re-use in your system >>>> however a motherboard upgrade will require you to buy a new copy of vista / vista is VERY strict about hardware upgrades and would require you to have a new copy of vista.

if you have more questions, fire away

best regards

joe

Re: advise on upgrading my CPU

Hello Mellanie

in your shoes I would advise you replace your PSU / if your budget is tight >>>> go to mwave.com / click on refurbished in the tool bar of the webiste / then click on cases and powersupply links that bottom of page

they have an antec Neo HE 650 watt for $67.00 / thats a steal! I have bought hordes of the refurb "class" units >>>>> they have all come in new retail boxed offerings; I have come to the conclusion these are production overstock units

they sell many clunkers in there too, so if you dont see the antec neo 650 let me know and i will check for another

as for motherboard replacement

http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_board.htm

if you google search with the info how to replace a motherboard

you will get a ton of great info / read at least three or four different ones

then you will be ready, we can help if you hit some bumps in the road

best regards

joe
