P5GD2 Deluxe Bios flash, now no sound
I flashed my bios with the latest, version 1005.003. After that, I have no sound. The sound system IS enabled in bios setup. So I downloaded the Cmedia CMI9880 Audio driver V5.12.01.0007.36 and installed that. Still no sound. Device manager is clean. When I try to start the Windows volume control app, I get a "No active mixer devices available..." message. In Device Manager, the sound device is listed as a "C-Media High Definition Audio Device", and everything under it's property tab is enabled, including the mixer device. When I try to launch the "CMI Audio Config" control panel app, nothing happens.
When the system starts, I can hear the sound system apparently get initialized, with a soft "thump" of sound, but nothing after that. Before the bios upgrade, my sound worked fine. I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm stumped. Any ideas? |

I flashed the bios back the original version, which has at least given me basic stereo sound, but now I can't get rid of the updated sound drivers and reinstall the originals to get full sound functionality. The only solution I know is to reformat the hard disk and reinstall everything from scratch. Lesson learned I guess.

what did you need to format and reinstall ? because of the drivers update ?
If i come back to the previous bios version (which works with your motherboard? ), and since i didn't update the audio drivers, maybe should it rework as expected ? If it doesn't i don't want to reinstall, i would turn on the azalia in the bios. What a despite..... |

Yeah, if you haven't installed the updated audio drivers, then maybe rolling back to the original bios will fix your problem. I haven't reformatted and reinstalled yet, but I think I'll have to in order to get full audio functionality back. I've tried just about everything I can think of, but no matter what I do, the best I've been able to get is plain stereo audio. The audio driver from the Asus CD will not install, saying that the device isn't there. I even called Asus support, which was a complete waste of time.
The updated bios apparently changes the azalia controller to a HD audio controller. Reinstalling the original bios changes it back to azalia supposedly. I don't know if upgrading the bios made a permanent change to the audio chip or what, but Windows can't seem to find the azalia device any more. I don't know what the difference is either, but I can tell you that on my box, it has been a total disaster. Please post back here if rolling back to the original bios fixes your problem. |

I tied to coma back to the original bios version witch is on the support cd provided with the moterboard.
I get back in bios "Azalia controller" instead of HD audio, but it's still not detected in windows. Heu, i just see the windows UAA driver for CMEDIA triyng to install, but nothing to do, it doesn't work. I m afraid that the last bios make a permanent change on the chip, so what would be necessary is : 1-changing motherboard, 2 - having a new driver fot the cmedia controller.... i had a look on the cmedia website, there isn't any driver for this chip..... It 's amazing that asus doesn't know anything about this problem, nor try to help us with this..... in my situation this is not a big problem, as this pc is for an audio workstation in which i'll have two dsp audio cards...... BUT I WANT TO UNDERSTAND !!!! |

Dude, I just had an epiphany. I was playing around with Mandrake 10.1 when I decided to stop the installation process before it got started by just turning the computer completely off. When I rebooted into Windows, the sound system was redetected! I popped in the Asus CD and was finally able to reinstall the original sound drivers, along with the CMI Audio Config control panel applet. Now everything works like it should.
Evidently, through all the bios upgrades and downgrades, I had never actually cycled the system completely off. It seems like that is the key. I probably should have known that, but that little bit of info would make a good readme file to package along with bios updates, huh? |
