[SOLVED] Possible overheating? you decide
I just built my new machine last night and came to find out that my computer will boot up fine but 5-20sec in my machine will randomly shut down. I thought at first it was my PSU so I tested that with my other machine... WORKS GREAT. Ok next step I take out two sticks of RAM and leave two sticks of 1gig each (I also played around with just having one stick, etc)... still shutting down. I take out my video card... still s h u t t i n g d o w n. So last is my CPU... I take that puppy out and everything stays online for like 5min... no reboots or random shutdowns. All my other peripherals in my new system are fine. So now I know its my CPU... so next step is to troubleshoot this. Is it shutting down randomly because damaged?? I DONT KNOW. It seems to work fine... it will boot up.. POST all that happy crap. I checked my BIOS and it seems like my CPUs temperature skyrockets from 85degrees to 110 in just 10-20sec...... is this normal??? I DO have a stock heatsink and fan on there, but I allways use the stock, never had problems with them... is this a overheating issue?? Compound seems to be fine... I checked other threads and it seems temperatures of up to 120 are sometimes normal??
If so... why is my machine shutting down at only 110 then?? HELP! Here are my specs: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz EVGA 320-P2-N815-AR GeForce 8800GTS Superclocked 320MB 4GB CORSAIR XMS2 DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel 550W Antec True Power PSU |

Re: Possible overheating? you decide
You could have a defective CPU, or it can be overheating. If you can i'd put another cpu in there and see if you get the same result. If it shutdown at the same time everytime it most likely is overheating.

Re: Possible overheating? you decide
Hello and welcome to the TSF, it could be that you need to update the bios to support your quad cpu. You may need to manually set the timings and voltages for your memory in the bios. And, you seem to be a bit underpowered in my opinion....see the psu selection artical linked below and use the psu calculator to determine the minimum psu required, add 30% to the result for a proper psu reccomendation. Did you re apply the thermal paste (after cleaning off the old) 42C (110F) is a bit high for a cpu at idle but it is a quad core. However at 110F you are not in jepordy of overtemping. If your at 110C, then yes, you are way over temp.

Re: Possible overheating? you decide
So it has to shutdown at the same time everytime to most likely be overheating??
lets say I let it set for like 30seconds after I just tried to see how long it will last... usually only 5 sec because it is allready warmed up... so I figure it shuts off at a certain degree.. so far i havent determined that. Anyother ideas? |

Re: Possible overheating? you decide
Also... that PSU ran fine (with the 8800GTS installed BTW) on my old machine... that has 3gigs and a AMD dual core CPU with two DVD ROMS and other peripherals running so I dont think its the PSU thats causing the random shut downs. But who knows.. it could be.. prove me wrong!! :D
NOTE - It's shutting down. Usually when I had PSU problems in the past with lack of voltage to my system it would RESTART. My issue is that it's randomly shutting down only after 5-20 sec of operation... depends on how long it's been running for. That's why I think it's a overheating issue cause if its warmed up it will shut down faster. Just common sense coming into play there, but then again I could be wrong. Thanks for the replies gents. Re: Possible overheating? you decide
I had a very similar post not too long ago....the memory timings and voltages did the trick. Try loosing up the timings to 5-5-5-15 and try setting the ddr ref volts to at least 2.1V, when runing with all four dimm slots populated you normally need a touch more voltage than spec. I would also check the bios revision currantly installed and see what the mfg's websites says about cpu support and which bios revision is nessessary for quad support.

Re: Possible overheating? you decide
Also another note...
I can leave the CPU in and it will stay on if I DONT plug in the 4pin power cable (up next to the CPU) which I believe powers the CPU?? Could this mean the CPU is defective... im confused. |
