Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

M: is the first partition on your second drive. Set a 100-100 page file on c: and a 1900-1900 page file on m: then restart the computer (so that the page files get created) and defrag c: and m:

Forcing windows to unload the dlls is not needed. Removing unneeded shortcuts in the startup folder can help, but better save those shortcut somewhere else in case you find out they were needed after all.

Which problems are you still having with this computer ?

Have you tried using the onboard video instead of the PCI video card ? See whether this makes any changes.

Have you tried reverting to XP's firewall and uninstall Zone Alarm ?

You could uninstall everything that's related to yahoo, you don't need the yahoo toolbar if you're using firefox which already has a quick search bar.

Any error messages in the device manager (start => run => devmgmt.msc) ? Check "show hidden devices" in the view menu.

Is your mouse an usb mouse ? Try a ps/2 one and see if the problem still happens.

We should still wait until an hardware tech tells us exactly which power supply you need and you get a new power supply, if we're lucky this could solve your problem.

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

Ok, sent a PM to TheMatt to ask advice about your PSU and he advised this one :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703009

Don't know if newegg ships to Brazil so have a look at the other 700W models in the High End Power gamer range at the bottom of this thread and see if you can get one of those at your place.

Btw, would this be a correct summary of your specs :
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4GHZ
1GB Memory
GeForce 7600GS 512MB
water cooling system AQUACOOL
2 IDE HDD (WD 200GB, Seagate 250GB)
Probably 1 floppy drive, 1 DVD drive, 1 DVD burner and 2-3 USB devices ?

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

All specs perfectly correct except for the USB ports, I have 6 of them and three card readers, I use quite a bit of portable media, cameras, memory sticks etc.......which is very important for my work.

The PSU link shows a descent case however I am highly considering one with two fans....I dont care about noise levels as long as it does not sound like a bulldozer and bother people while they are sleeping. The AquaCool probably draws a nice load from the PSU right.

Everything was working just fine (just a bit slow maybe because my MOBO and Processor are 4 years old and i probably heated them up a bit already) until I did the edit in the registry to unload DLLs (which i deleted), deleted few start-up shortcuts (which yes i should have saved) and used the Registry Mechanic (saved backup and reinstated it). Then i tried system restore ( i made a check point before using Registry Mechanic) and it did not work.

I do not think Registry Mechanic did any damage. Skype is the program that spikes the CPU, i had a problem with it before and unisntalled and downloaded it again at which point it was working fine until...see the first paragraph above.

I need to learn for the system restore to make more check points. Also you are a Windows Tech so you probably could help me optomize my system performance which should keep it a little cooler unitl hardware upgrade takes place and will help in the future.

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

Well the basic rule is the less you have installed the faster it'll run but we can't really change your power needs by changing some software settings.

Have a look at these threads :
http://www.techsupportforum.com/arti...imisation.html
http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...-computer.html

Else there's still the possibilty to backup all your valuable data and reinstall Windows from scratch. This will get rid of any software problem you could have.

Be sure to check my previous post since you posted nearly at the same time.

Edit : ok, just saw you edited your post. The number of USB ports in not important, what's important is the number of USB devices you have connected in them. The card reader will need some power though.

Unplug the USB devices you don't need and use a ps/2 mouse and keyboard if possible until you've got a quality PSU.

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

Don't forget that you'll have to reinstall all the critical updates from windows update between now and the time the restore point was created. Some programs you installed after the restore point was created may also stop working, in which case you'll need to reinstall them as well.

I restored to 3 days ago.......outlook wont work and if i reinstall i dont want to loose the date, skype still spikes the cpu as well as outlook.Msn messenger still works.

I dont understand, shouldnt system restore undo all the dumb things i have done?

P.S.> For a couple weeks my Task manager shows running at 250mb or more which is high while im using the antivirus firewall and graphics card.It used to be at 210 max using all of these. And since that has started happening a Run.dll has been running for what I have no idea!

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

I must be really slow or something....i updated (configured) Zone Alarm Firewall to accept Skyp and it just works fine....so thats what must have been causing the problem all along...I guess when I had the trojan downloader and virus problems it reconfigured a whole lot of things.

Let us see if I could get Outlook to work as well......The start-up still runs high memory usage.

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

Ok, Outlook works fine. It didnt start the first time so it asked me to start in safe mode which i accepted that didnt work either. So, i have tried the Zone Alarm configuration for it.When I clicked on the Outlook icon it opened a window telling me that safe mode didnt work and asked permission to repair.I also accepted. Then it dug up some Microsoft windows & Front page and now it works.

I honestly dont know if they are working because of system restore (and Registry Mechanic messed some things up) or the Zone Alarm Firewall configurations(most likely).

However, i think i still have some memory leaks using windowxs xp.

Bottom line folks get a windows original official cd and forget back - ups of it.I know microsoft got really slick and now that doesnt come with a new computer, maybe because the manufacturers dont want to pay for it any longer who knows.

P.S.> Just passing By....you are like crawling here with me instead of passing by...i know...you got a bonafide newbie on your hands...sucks but what can i do...

Will try all those optimize links and see if the memory usage (not CPU) goes down a little.

What is your opinnion on Resgistry Mechanic? I have been using System Mechanic for a couple years and it never gave me any problems.

Thanks....will let you guys know in the next couple of days the rest off the story...

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

I hadn't thought of checking the firewall's settings. I'll remember that next time a user has a high CPU usage whith an internet related process.

I've not used any registry cleaner since the time I was using Windows 98 so I cant' really tell you whether Registry Mechanics is good or not, but registry cleaners are usually not needed. If they remove the wrong keys you're in trouble.

250MB of commit charge is not much with XP. I'd be happy with that and there's no need to try decreasing the memory usage if you're not having slowdowns.

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

I am showing slow-downs respectively and relatively speaking to before all these problems started. I would say between 35%-50% slow down.I mean things are not that slow but they were much much faster.

Right now the usage (memory) is at 352mb with Firewall,Antivirus,Video Graphics card, IE running.

Before all these problems with these same programs running it would go most 220mb sometimes 230mb max.

I am not using USB mouse or keyboard nor do I have any device plugged in since this thread was started.

The most usage EXEs are SVHost, VSmon, Explorer, IE, Skype, and Firefox. Most of my configurations were screwed up after the trojan virus attacks.

Even the time is different on the forum for the last three days (so i rescanned and used all same security procedures as before advised by your Security team...NOTHING CLEAN.
IE for examples closes when i have various windows open and i close only one???!???

I am attaching a snapshot of Task Manager and SmitFrauds running processes:

well funny thing now the time on the forum is correct to my region and memory useag went down to.....320mb not significant but a little bit...

When it spikes its usually Explorer, IE, Firefox, sometimes when skype is on but the program itself doesnt go very high....most of the time EXEs like Svhost VSmon go pretty high as well when its spiking.

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

If you don't mind my input, i would highly recommend uninstalling the AVG anti-spyware program. It is a troublesome program. You can use effectively in its place Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware as well as SpywareBlaster and Windows Defender. These programs are known to run very well with little or no problems. AVG Anti-Spyware used to be Ewido until Grisoft bought them out. Ewido and AVG AS are very heavy resource hogs.

When you do all of this, find and install the best optimizer program available, CCleaner, and run the cleaner part then run the "Issues" part. Don't change anything from default, just run it how it is and also select "Yes" when it asks to save.

Do all this and you should have a great running PC. Please post your results or questions if you have any.

Spybot is very popular but it detects much less than AVG. I am thinking about uninstalling AVG and just leaving Spybot and mostly doing online scans.

Re: Sent here by Ried Assistant Manager Security - Help!

I'm starting to remember how my PCs were doing when I had Ewido/AVG AS. As much as I can remember they seemed to be doing just what yours is doing.

Although Ewido/AVG did have good detection capabilities, it was not worth using because of system problems like you are experiencing.

With the combined force of all of those AS programs I listed, You should be able to detect and neutralize any threats.

Believe me about CCleaner, it is a free and small program but very valuable in what it does to help a PC run better. If you do decide to use it, run the "Issues" part as many times as needed to clear any remaining issues. Save each time by adding a ".1" or ".2" and so on to the subsequent saves of first save of each series of runs.
