I need help big time...

okay so I got this nvidia ENHANCE Galaxy GeForce 7900 GS 256MB PCI-E X16 7900GS graphics card which I run fine on windows vista for about 3 months. then I went to holiday for 2 weeks and came back and my computer was recked.
I kept getting the blue screen for memory management errors until one day the computer wouldn't even load. I turn it on it goes on,off,on,off,on,off... with monitor not responding so I cant really see whats going on

that was the story of 2 weeks ago since then I have brought a new computer and I transfered the same graphic card to this one running windows vista. this computer did not give me the blue screen (2 times it did) but most of the time it would just refresh adn give the vista recovery message saying nvidia*something* stopped responding but it recovered.
I did some research on this and i am not alone but it seems now the new computer is recked as well!
this one has the same symptoms as my last one... I turn it on (sometimes it goes off and comes back on in 2 sec) but most of the time it starts to run however again the monitor and keyboard does not respond at all.

now I've changed the graphic card thinking that would solve the problem but changing graphic card did not do anything so its not from there. my monitor and keyboard are not at fault because i am using it on my old old computer right now...

well if you red all that I appreciate it and I was wondering if someone could give me some insights as to where this on,off,on,off problem could arise from suddenly on 2 different systems? (obv. my next graphic card wont be nvidia anymore )

heres the specs (just different graphics card)
1st computer:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/pro...T/T9306/085705
2nd computer:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=250146511520

Re: I need help big time...

I doubt either one of those pre built computers have a psu capable of powering your videocard, please look on the psu's of each machine and list their specs. Its quite possible that with the addition of the videocard you overstressed the psu and caused the failures. Since changing the graphics card did not solve your problem I don't think you can blame this on Nvidia, most pre-built systems come with really craptacular psu's...espeecially those in the price ranges of the listed machines (mid to low end) despite the fact its states in the case of the second machine its 600W....if you read our psu artical (linked below my sig) you'll understand wattage is not all what its cracked up to be. I would think that a simple psu replcement with a good quality psu's (use the artical's psu selector and add 30% to the results for a psu reccomendation) will bring both computers back to good use. I would also reccomend using either the latest drivers for the card or using the well known and stable 84.21 driver to rule out any potential issues with a bad driver (be sure to remove the old driver before installing any new ones) I would expect to see a good 750W psu from the likes of Antec(Trio), Seasonic, OCZ or PC Power & Cooling for your machines

Re: I need help big time...

thanks for the help, can the sysmptoms I described be linked to anything else? perhaps the cpu or mobo?

also on my first computer I had used this graphic card with no problem for over a year! can these PSU problem occur at any time?
Also on the second computer as I said it kept refreshing and giving error/recovery message of videocard and it was on of these occasions that the computer froze and the problem occured.

here are the specs of the 2 PSU:

1st comp:
FPS450-60MDV - AC:230-240V DC:350W

2nd comp:
ATX-450W

Re: I need help big time...

the second computer rarely does the on,off,on,off thing but the monitor and keyboard do not respond.. is that still a symptom of PSU failure?

Re: I need help big time...

I can suggest one thing to you....
uninstall all the video drivers from the control panel
run an app called "Driver cleaner pro" which finds and deletes ALL old files that remain in the hard drive AFTER the driver has been "uninstalled" and then make a clean install with a newer driver downloaded from the NVIDIA website directly. It solved all my weird error message problems and video quirks

Re: I need help big time...

If the other two members suggestions do not help, yes, depending on the quality of the psu, an overstressed psu will take varing times before it statrts to fail. A bad psu can cause almost anything to act goofy, that the problems occured after your upgrade to a rather powerful gpu from a relatively weak one is a good indication, especially since both psu's are poor generic ones

thanyou very much for your input... I've red the article on PSU which was very intresting and will be looking into the 500-750W PSU.

I will report back with the results in a few days.

Re: I need help big time...

It was not the PSU. tested both computers with a new 700w OCZ and no result. I then got frustratedand took it to the repair center. they phoned me and said early diagnosis shows to be the MOBO.

so now I need a good mobo recomendation, possibly one that has high upgradibility.

Re: I need help big time...

well I did put in a good PSU: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115881 which even though it didnt help in fixing is a good investment so I am happy.

basically i took the second computer to a repair professional. he only said early indications so he might be wrong (he is still working on it).

to be honest I think the culprit is the GPU. I mean the 2 computers only had this thing in common. the second computer broke down during one of the recovery messages that vista normally gave only this time it froze, so who knows, maybe the gpu slot of the motherboard got fried or something.

well its either that or the CPU because its not the GPU itself as i tried alternatives, not the PSU, Dont thing RAM has those kinda symptoms, Not the Hard drive (again symptoms seems unlikely for hard drive) so the only 2 things left is either mobo or the CPU

by the way this is the error (simple google search results in loads of topics regarding it but no fix)

"Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding, but has successfully recovered."

Re: I need help big time...

you will need monitor function to do anything

I would try another card, I have seen a few motherboards that had absolute conflicts with nvidea based video cards ??

thats a possibility ??

BTW: I doubt your problem is cpu, they are probally the toughest computer component in the box IMHO
