[resolved]Screen, but nothing else

I have an Asus A7V8X mobo, 1 1/2 gb of ram and a AMD 2800 XP cpu, and an Enermax 550 True pwr PSU. When I try to boot up, I get 1 short beep, seeks to each of the optical drives, the Asus logo on the screen, and then nuthin. The green lite on the mobo is on, and the winxp cd in the drive spins and then stops, but no more action. I had a spare AMD 1800 chip, so I installed it, nothing changed. I pulled the CMOS battery and jumper/reset the CMOS to no avail. I am now at a loss and need some help.
HELP!!!

Re: Screen, but nothing else

Are you trying to install xp? Is this a new build? If yes you need to go into
bios and set boot order. When installing new cpu did you put thermal
compound on as per instructions.

Re: Screen, but nothing else

No fellas, it is not a new install, been running XT Pro for several years, and no it does exactly what I stated in my post and no more, can't get to bios, it doesn't get that far. The fans all run, the board lite is on, and I get a screen.
System specs;
Enermax 550 PSU
AMD 2800 XP
1 1/2 gigs Ram
Nvidia 6600 GT
2 hard drives
DVD
CD ROM
I even swapped out the CPU with an 1800, but made no diff.
Prolly a bad board, but I don't know that yet.

Re: Screen, but nothing else

If your seeing the asus logo then its gone to far. As soon as you hit the
power button you should be tapping the delete key to enter bios. Make
sure keyboard is plugged in good and tight and the caps lock is not on.
When you hear the beep, and it seeks the cd drive and floppy and its
all done what color light do you have on the monitor, green or amber?
Sometimes with asus boards you have to hit the f1,or f2 key to enter setup,
in certain circumstances, like if bios feels theres a change and is forcing
you to make adjustments. May work.

Hi manic........ya, in my case setup is reached with the delete key, and I've tapped it continously from the moment the power goes on, but nada nuttin. The monitor displays the Asus logo till I turn off the power. Seems to me like the memory, cpu, and graphics would be ok, so that leaves the mobo?

Re: Screen, but nothing else

Disconnect everything but the cpu, video card and ram, see what happens.
If no reaction pull ram, see if bios will react. Pull video card, should hear
multiple beeps, if you ever get into bios disable onscreen logo. The
mobo could be bad, but we should exhaust every possiblity.

Re: Screen, but nothing else

Manic, I found the problem, was a partially bad mem chip. It would boot as far as the logo and stop. I pulled that particular chip and it boots fine on 1 gig. I put it in another slot and only got 1.215 gigs istead of 1536, so it was partially bad. Never had one to do that before.
Thanks for the help.

Re: [resolved]Screen, but nothing else

Great! Ram does go bad, not very often but when it does can be a head
scratcher...
