[RESOLVED] Computer not starting
Hi!
I just assembled my new computer and when trying to power it on nothing happens. I tried it outside the box with just RAM, Graphics, CPU and still no sign of life. There is a green power led on the motherboard lighting up when i switch on the PSU. Apart from that I get no sign of life. Any help appreciated. I have: Motherboard: Asus Socket 775 ATX Intel 975X (P5W DH Deluxe) CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4 GHz PSU: Hiper Type R 530W RAM: Corsair XMS2 Xtreme 2048MB DDR2 PC2-6400 Case: Antec P180B |

Re: Computer not starting
An early suspect would be the power supply and personally, I have no confidence in the Hiper power supply.
However, if you get nothing, nada, zip, when you hit the power button and the motherboard lights up, then trace the two wires back from the power switch. Take them off the front panel header on the motherboard. Then, take a screwdriver or paper clip and short across those two pins to test if the power switch has gone away on you. Don't hold it on there, but simply touch it while the computer is plugged in and ready to go. If the switch is bad, the computer will turn on, if not, then we try something else. Post back with results or lack thereof.

Re: Computer not starting
Run the computer with the mobo out of the case. You might have a faulty power switch - disconnect the switch and short the two pins on the mobo with a small screwdriver:
power.jpg BTW - what graphics card do you have? **edit** I have to learn to type faster

Re: Computer not starting
Since i'm aldreay running everything outside the case, I did use a screwdriver on the Power-SW pins.
I have a Asus Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB. Might it be that the PSU is actually too weak? I tried it on my sons PC, and it did get it to start. Last edited by Biko; 04-22-2007 at 09:04 AM. |

@ Biko: I believe you're underpowered. Run Power supply calculator (in my sig). Add 30% to the result. |

Re: Computer not starting
Do you have another power supply you can try? I would suggest that if you do. I suspect it is either dead or too weak to pull the rig you have. If dying, they can also be intermittent and maybe that is why it worked in the other computer.
Not too long ago (about two months), I had a power supply that had been performing fine from Antec (and they are an excellent quality) and one day it suddenly would show the light, but would not power on the computer. No other symptoms. I tried everything, but it was just a dead supply. I did get an RMA and a new supply since it was less than a year old, but my point is, that even good quality supplies can tank for no reason. Have you tried reseating the CPU. Some times when they don't go in with the correct amount of tension on the heatsink clamp or are not slipped down and making good contact, you won't get them to do anything, so that might be worth a try. Thought I would mention that since eneles is offline for the moment. That way, you might have something to try.

Re: Computer not starting
I don't have another PSU with a 24-pin connector. I think i'll pop by the store where I bought it all to check if they can get the mobo running there.
Thanks for all the help so far. I'll keep you posted. Biko |

Re: Computer not starting
Also - have a close look at the motherboard. Are there any miscoloured spots looking "burned". Bulging capacitors? Check the standoffs between the case and the mobo - they should match the mounting holes on the mobo (no more, no less).

Re: Computer not starting
I went back to the store stating my case, hoping to change psu+mobo. I was offered a new psu for starters and was told to come back if that didn't help.
Now armed with a Cooltek 600W ATX2.2 I tried again, with same result though. So today I hope I can change motherboard. And no, I can't see any miscolored components. Btw, with CPU+RAM+GPU atleast the fan for PSU+CPU should start moving when using the screwdriver trick on the power-sw pins right? |

Re: Computer not starting
Yep, when you touch those pins with the unit plugged in and on, it should start. If not, then the switch is OK.

Re: Computer not starting
Got myself a new motherboard today (Asus P5B Deluxe) and it works! They tested my "old mobo" where I bought it and couldn't get it running either.
Btw found this which might have been the problem: http://event.asus.com/2006/mb/p5w_dh_deluxe_faq.htm Thanks for all the help :) Last edited by Biko; 04-24-2007 at 02:17 PM. |

Re: Computer not starting
We are so happy you got it going. Now, don't be a stranger on here just because you have your computer running. Use that darn thing to spend some time on TSF. Have a great evening.
