Cooling

Hi, I am in the process of upgrading my computer and getting all the parts for it. One of the main issues I am thinking about right now is cooling for my Processor. Im upgrading my motherboard, ram, hdd and processor from an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+
Now my friend is saying that because of my processor size I probably need to invest in Liquid Cooling. Well I don't want to pan out the money for a nice one if I don't have to. So I figure that I have 3 options and im wondering which one I should do.
1. Liquid Cooling
2. Do nothing and go with the AMD heatsink fan that came w/the new processor
3. Upgrade to a heavy duty heatsink fan

So what should I do and what would you recommend? If I should get a heavy duty heatsink fan how many RPM's would you recommend?

Re: Cooling

If you don't plan on overclocking you should be fine with stock cooler.
You might consider cleaning off the thermal compound that comes preapplied and using some Arctic Silver 5. For instructions on how to properly clean off and reapply thermal compound check out the Thermal Paste Info link in my signature.
The only reason you would need H20 is if you plan on really pushing the overclocking abilities of the CPU.

Re: Cooling

Yeah I do not plan on overclocking it at all. Thank you for the fast reply! Do you by chance know how many RPM's the stock ones push out?

I don't know what the stock RPM is, and doing a quick search I came up empty.
Sorry.
If I can dig anything up I'll post though.

Re: Cooling

right now the big shots on the block are the Thermalright 120 and Tuniq

http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/m...t_ultra120.htm

(be warned; check your case dimenions, this baby is huge) & probally the king

also, seeing as you are going for a whole system upgrade, I suggest you look at the coolermaster full tower case that runs about $150.00 at newegg
I have been selling that lately as my favorite child build, they are very roomy, excellent air flow plenty of case fan configs to maximize air flow, I can not think of one thing they need to improve with this case!

you may want to sell of your old system on ebay to cushion the $$$$ shock ?

tuniq:

both of these cpu coolers are awesome and will allow you to overclock plenty down the road if you change your mind. The coolers will allow you to overclock your chip by 70% of its headroom capability(which is only 10% of the cpu speed BTW).

The last drop of CPU head room speed needs watercooling to squeeze the lemon. but its a pricey adventure ?

Once you get above the AMD 4400 your overcloking limits are at about 10% anyway, these chips are already overclocked, the only real margin you can extract is by using the 10% slack AMD gives their selling speed

enjoy

Re: Cooling

Hey Linderman, have you heard about these coming out soon?

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=8142

I think this will be the next gen cooler. The first carbon and water based cpu cooler all in one..
