Core 2 DUO problems!! Possible power problem or overheating!!

Hi,

i having a little trouble with my rig:

Core 2 DUO E6400 @2.454GHz
1Gig Crucial Balistix PC6400 @460.2MHz
X1900XT @695.25/774.0
Mobo :MSI P965 Neo

I was having some random reboots when playing games, so i thought i was having an overheating problem so i stressed my GPU with ATI TOOL and loged the temps, temps were normal and no reboot.

I then moved onto the CPU, I stress tested the CPU with Everest Ultimate Edition and logged the temps with speed fan. the comp rebooted when the CPU hit 47c, i re did the test three times and the comp consistently rebooted at 47c.
47c seems like a pretty good temp for my CPU (although im no expert)
and 2.454GHz is a very low overclock for my CPU.

This leads me to believe that it is a PSU problem?
My PSU:
AKasa 550W powerplus
For amps and rails check out http://www.akasa.co.uk/akasa_english/spec_page/psu/spec_ak_p550ff_bkv1.htm

Any help on what my problem is and how to solve it would be much appreciated.

Well, you can convert speed fan to display in fahrenheit if you are more familiar with that system of measurement. But 47c is about 116.6 degrees fahrenheit. Can't say that is high or not. You would have to check the specs for that CPU. Doesn't seem really high to me, but it can be the cause. Check your BIOS settings, it may be set low for protecting the CPU. If it is, don't mess with it till you know what the max temp is for that CPU. But, I wouldn't set it at the max rated temp for it either.

47C is not too high for your CPU 60C would be though

but you do have room for temp improvement

your Asaka PSU has a horrible reputation for low quailty

I would look for replacement with an Antec Trio Sp-3 550 watt (the 650 watt version would be a better choice for about $30.00 more)

also which cpu cooler heatsink are you using ?

There are alot of fellas that are getting very good results with the Zalman 9500! some are lowering temps by as much as 10C and that heatsink will keep your mobo cooler too, which is a plus

Thank you both for your help

CannonFodder, in regards on setting the cpu temperature threshold in the BIOS, i went into H/W monitoring and found a setting called "CPU temp. Threshold" it was set to 2 (im not sure what this setting means and i had no option to change it.)

Linderman, unfortunately in Ireland Good comp. stores are few and far between so getting good quality products at reasonable prices is a difficult task.

However there is one and ONLY one good store in Ireland Komplett.ie, What would be your view on the following PSU:Fortron/Source Powersupply ATX 650W EPS12V, SATA, 24/20pin http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=320295
unfortunatly komplett.ie give little or no info on this PSU.

In terms of a heatsink Im still using the crap and ridiculously hard to install stock heatsink.

I was thinking of getting one of these two:

Akasa EVO Blue CPU Cooler http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=324041

OR

NorthQ 3312BLA UFO http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=328617

Thanks again for your help

Thanks for the advice linderman

Im gonna go with the fortron PSU

I would go with zalaman 9500 but komplett.ie are sold out, and knowing komplett.ie they wont be back in stock for a long time, I think ill go with the AKasa heatsink.

As for what the CPU temp threshold means, check the MB's manual. I can't imagine that you can't change that at all, but I guess it's possible.

Apparently what you were looking at is a tolerance setting to make the "smart fan" feature speed up the fan if it reaches a certain temp. Probably not a lot of help. I would go along with Linderman and say find a really good heatsink for that CPU.
