You can't upgrade cpu on the Gigabyte 8PE667 Ultra board to the newer core 2duo processor. You'll need to upgrade the board. Something on this scale is what you would be interested in http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-341-1.htm or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131028.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I want to remove the old mainboard, upgrade to a new mainboard but keep the current hard drive intact and was wondering if I stay with a mainboard based on an intel chipset how much compatability problems I would have? (For instance the intel 975 chipset.)

The chipset uses different drivers. The 845PE uses a ICH4 controller and the 975X uses a ICH7R controller.

you will need to install new motherboard (the gigabyte ds3) is a great one, youll need a new conroe CPU, you also need DDR2 memory

you will need to evaluate your power supply to make sure its up to the task of running a new system

as far as your boot drive goes, all you would need to do is perform a reapir install

while you wait >>>> you can google for

replace the motherboard and keep the operating system
