Onboard audio not working

I just recently wiped my friends hard and put a new install of windows on his computer for him. and now his onboard audio isn't working. he has a pretty new compaq. anyone know what the problem might be, he's checked the device manager and it says everything is "working properly"

Normally I would say the sound driver in not installed but if he checked device manager and there are no yellow marks and it says its working I guess thats not it so try the simple stuff

Make sure the speakers are in the right port and turned on
Make sure the speakers work on another computer
Check start>controll panel>sound and audio devices, make sure it is not muted and turned up.
