Hello everyone,
I've just built a system with an ASUS P5VDC-X motherboard, Pentium D940 3.2Ghz processor, 1Gb RAM, Hitachi HDD and a PNY GeForce FX5500 AGP graphics card. My problem is that I only get POST visuals on my monitor after I do a CMOS reset. I then get the F1 (enter Setup) or F2 (load BIOS defaults) options. If I enter setup and change settings such as the RTC, boot devices and primary graphics adapter and then Save and Exit the system restarts but with no video and no beeps indicating a problem. This has been driving me nuts for 2 weeks. I checked the battery and it is supplying the required 3V. Are there any BIOS settings to tweak to get this board/processor/AGP card combo to work? Cheers, The TerminalMan |

Flashing the BIOS
Hello Siti,
I forgot to mention in the first post that I was getting an Intel uCode error during bootup with version 0303 of the BIOS so I downloaded and flashed version 0501. This cleared the uCode error but did NOT solve the no video problem. I'll also mention that I have run the Ultimate Boot CD and a Knoppix LiveCD and they worked fine so I concluded that ALL the hardware was working OK and it was a BIOS configuration problem. Another worry for me is the single channel DDR2 memory. Do you, or anyone, know about any compatibility issues with this type of RAM and the P5VDC-X motherboard? |

Solution
According to the Techs at Computer Sonics, Tukwila, the problem was a motherboard short caused by incorrect grounding of the board to the chassis using the six standoffs required by this board. I had six standoffs and screws but according to them I screwed up somewhere. They did, somehow, get the board to consistently post with video but then I couldn't install WinXP without file copy errors and BSODs. I changed over to a Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 board and everything is working fine now. ComputerSonics would not accept the return of the ASUS board within their 30 day return period. They messed me about so much with this problem, and others, and I will not be using them as a source of components again.
