My System

Send a message via MSN to linderman
Download and run sandra lite (free in my sig)

then copy and paste the system summary into this thread. Alsp copy and paste the system temps, system voltages into here as well.

Yes it is possible that CPU overheating will definelty make a system shutdown, we can ascertain this better once we see your system temps and volatages, and the system summary will shed some light on exact what memory you need. You should be able to buy memory on ebay for about $80.00 for two sticks of 512 dont know what your budget is but here is a simple summary

fortron PSU >>> $51.50
Video Card approx $50.00
Memory $80.00

or you can buy a single stick of memory now for $40.00 and add more later; you may also get lucky and get a used pair for substantially less, I have bought tons of used computer parts on ebay and have never had any problems; just let me know and I can help guide you on who to buy from and who to avoid.

Joe,

I was unable to get the version in your sig to work as only for NT. This is what I got from the version I could get installed.

I am not exactly sure how to get my temps etc out of the BIOS but think it is restart and tap f1 or enter then not sure. In fact I have looked for temps before and had no luck but was likely not in the right area.

SiSoftware Sandra

But since month four have been replacing hard drives probably get about a year each
this isnt normal, did you in fact replace the power supply?

check the motherboard, look carefully at the capacitors, look for any leaking or bulged caps.

a fluctuating supply will put a hurting on just about every component in your rig, including your operating system.

Well after trying three different screen capture tools I am unable to get the screen pasted in this reply.

The only thing present in the right hand pane when my screen looks like yours (sensor highlighted) is the following

Field Value
Sensor Properties
Sensor Type HDD

Temperatures
Seagate ST380013A 43 °C (109 °F)

No other info is there as in your paste. And I have combed it for those details and do not find them. No cooling fan sensors or detailed voltages like you get.

I suspect your system temps are going to be very high >>>> you hard drive is at 43C they should bea round 31C

at 55C a hard drive will wig out / shutdown / and begin mechanical trouble big time

check your case fans how many you got ???? which direction are they blowing and are they working

take the side cover off PC and blow a house fan into the machine

let us know the results

I have no case fans!!! and that temp is with the side off the Tower.

And needless to say I have been getting no power offs today or yesterday and still have not changed a thing other than a good cleaning and reseating of RAM and vid/sound cards.

As for the How Many Case Fans. I have (below the PSU) what appears to be a vent and mount for a case fan. Staples is one mile away and I believe I saw them for 8 bucks. Which way should it blow and how would I rig more than one. As it is there appears to be a three post plug on the MB right near the rear vent.

I have been power using cutting cd's to back up my system and when i first started up this morning I noted it was 38C.

One more question, would the Antec 500w PSU have a more powerful fan in it or would it power the heatsink fan or case fans faster?

Well here is the scoop

the harder you push an electrical componet the more heat it will make especially if its being used @ or near the max output

the more heat the PSU makes or its subjected to the less voltage it CAN produce

so to answer your question the Antec Sp-500 will have better cooling AND it will run cooler because it will be at an idel compared to your current unit

you need case fans badly !!!!

the bigger the better and get ones with the highest output cfm

i was at staples the other day >>>> they had fans that were 1700cfm and others that were above 3000 cfm get the higher ones !!

they are easy to mount look in your case very good there should be room to mount at least 2 >>>>>80mm fans

if you are handy with tools ?????? you could cut a hole in the side of your case cover and mount a 120mm case fan to blow air into the case !!

I have done that many times with just a apir of tin snips (the red handled ones)

or if you can stand it >>>> just leave the side cover off and blow a small house fan into the machine >>>> i have seen many guys do that when they have spent a fortune on computer high end parts >>>> my best friend has just such a set-up he bought a high velocity 10-inch fan which blows air directly into his box >>>> he wants to be absolutely sure he isnt cooking his twins !! (a pair of 7900 GT video cards!!)

Joe,

Ten minutes with a house fan blowing into the tower the temp is down to 37C (99F).

Should go get the case fan huh. How about a stronger Heatsink fan??

37C is ALOT better

yeah maybe a better heat sink fan would do it ????? i am not sure if your processor has thermal grease under it ???? you could tell once you remove your existing heat sink fan if you see a dried up paste under it then you will need to remove all existing thermal paste and buy a small tube (about $10.00) @ best buy and apply a little dab prior to installing a new heat sink you only use a dab about the size of a grain of white rice.

Its very hard to pin point the exact cause of the excessive heat >>>> a failing PSU can also make components heat up not producing enough voltage to meet their needs >>>>> you ever feel a lead cord that is too thin and too long when you run a power saw with it ?????

computer diagnosis is really mostly a game of swapping out parts until fixed >>>> experience will just help you replace fewer parts before getting things right !

cheers

joe

I have had the heatsink Fan off many times to clean it but never the Heatsink itself. Looks like a fairly tricky clip system there but i have researched it a bit. Think I will start with the case fan(s) and order the Fortron PSU and vid card now and go from there.

Actually, 34C now.

Thanks.

OK Joe,

So I bought the Radeon Graphics card off ebay. It says it comes with overclocking software.

a) What is overclocking heard it many times no idea.

b) Is my system capable or viable enough to be overclocked??

Don't chuckle, I know its antiquated. Almost had the guy at work ready to give me XP Pro CD's "just in case my work laptop needed them"

Went into town. Staples had no 500w psu's and I decided it is working I can wait for the mail order one to come.

Steve:

overclocking in my opinion is a dangerous waste of compoents whether it be CPU's or video cards. If you overlock only slightly then you are safe but get very little gain, if you overclock the components in a bigger step say 20% then you see gain but you have also entered the danger zone!

Dont install the video card until you have installed the new PSU >>> the new video card will need enough additional power that it will crush your PSU and cause instability; I guarantee it !!

Your getting there though, you will get the benefit of having a differnet system when you are done !!

that is nothing wrong with squeezing the last days outta that machine; after another year passes then you can jump into a system that really is the NEW age rocket (intel conroe)

enjoy and dont hesitate to ask questions

Update:

I installed the 80mm case fan in upper rear and moved my HD back a bay away from the front wall. Put the side panel back and taadaa temps holding steady at 34c even while playing Links LS Golf!!

Thanks Joe. If it runs any hotter I'm going to cut a hole in lower front of the side panel and do as you suggested with a fan blowing in.

I will def. hold off on the new (high powered) vid card until I power up. Thanks for all of your help over the past few days. It has been a tremendous relief to get this thing churning again.

yeah I should say too there is a nice cool breeze coming through the window atmy feet where the Tower is. So time will tell.

Thx.
