New Memory Problems

Hi.
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Core @166FSB
MSI K7N2G-L motherboard (3 ports for DDR up to 3GB total and dual channel)
Kingmax 2x256MB DDR 400 (PC3200) RAM Dual channel @200 (400)

Having problems installing new 2x512MB DDR400 (PC3200) on this motherboard when running it in dual channel @ 200. Runs fine when in 1:1 with fsb of cpu @166, but any higher and it does not boot.

Why is it that I can run 2x256MB DDR 400 at 200 (400), but when I take that out and insert 2x512MB DDR 400 in the same slots it only runs at 166 (333)? Does this make any difference? Any help would be much appreciated. (if need any more info let me know).

are you trying to say it dose not run at 1:1?
or you trying to say it dose not run when its over 333mhz?

It does not run over 333mhz. Wondering why when it is DDR 400. When I had the 2x256MB DDR 400 in, it ran at 400mhz no problem, but when I try with the 2x512MB DDR 400, it does not boot. Just wondering why that is?

My System

Hi,

What brand of ram is the 2x512?
It could be a limitation of the motherboard but Socket A Amd cpu's do like to run in sync with the cpu, in other words both at 333mhz.

I doubt you will see any "real" differance when clocking the ram at 333.

I had a Abit board that did that same thing but when I overclocked the cpu up to almost 200 fsb the thing would then allow the ram to run at 200.

Now I am not saying to overclock your cpu because it would requirer better cooling and good ram to get it to that speed and it problably ain't worth the bother with all the tinkering but both your 2500 and the board are capable of it.

You could also try uping the ram voltage just a notch to see if that helps

hi,

The brand is Kingmax/Kingston. The memory I replaced (2x256Mb) was the same brand. Thanks for your comments. I have seen on some forums that nForce2 chipsets do have a problem with higher RAMs, but wasn't sure, when the motherboard manual says it can take up to 3Gb! Anyway, I will try to up the voltage on the ram a little and see if that helps, otherwise I will keep it at 333mhz (1:1 with the CPU). I have noticed a difference with 1Gb RAM compared to 512Mb RAM. Thanks for your help.....
