Over voltage
Hi everyone, I am after some advice as to what my problem may be, my system is a Gigabyte GA-81PE1000-G Rev3 ,Intel Pentium 4 Prescott,3EGHz,Legend DDR400 512MB x 2 ,256MB ATI Radeon 9259 ,2 x 80gig Seagate Barracuda, anyway it has been running sweet for 12 months now, that is until the other night, I was on my way out the door the otherday when passing my computer I saw a message on the screen, I cant remember it word for word but is said something like "something or other has detected an overvoltage or abnormal voltage in USB ports and will be shut down", as I was on my way out I just clicked on "ok" and headed out with the intention of looking into more when I returned. When I finally got back to look at it many hours later it had shut itself down and has never worked since, it simply wont post a thing, the CPU and case fans start and thats it, no display on the screen, no lights flash on the keyboard, just nothing, I have cleared the cmos, removed the battery for 30 mins but still no good. with the board stripped down to nothing but the cpu I get continuous high speed beeps. Can anyone suggest what may have went wrong or anything to try to get it fired up again, or even just how to tell if I need to replace the cpu or the board. I run a $150 Dick Smith surge and spike protection power board so I dont think the problem is caused by a surge.
Any help much appreciated as I use this system for work and am really struggling with out it. Thanks in advance Grant

i would replace the PSU before anything else. you didn't state what the PSU was, but you can go here to calculate the PSU you need. add 30% and then get one to match your power needs. there is a list below showing PSU makes and their quality.

Therefore, if you have information or evidence from testing or personal usage that would indicate that Zippy is not rated apprpriately, we would appreciate any experiences or evidence that the accuracy is not correct. Feel free to post or PM that information to me so I can forward it to the appropriate person on the hardware team and they can take a look at the information. Thanks for sharing.

is it possible for short or electrical fault to somehow erase the bios?

Hi, yeah I have stripped the computer down to just the basics, nothing attached except for key board and mouse.I have tried a Codegen 300w and an XSonic 400w, if the bios has been erased somehow there is no way to get it back is there?

Yes; you can replace your bios chip cheaply by going to ebay and typing a search for "bios chip"
I dont think that is your problem though. Try a PCI slot video card and pull your current AGP card. If you dont have a PCI slot card >>>> you can generally pick one up dirt cheap ($5.00) at any PC repair shop. It does not have to be any wiz bang card; just plain old vanilla; for testings sake Those PSU's you have will be very under powered for that system >>> you should be running at least 500 watts >>>> a good reasonable priced one is the Antec SP-500 for $68.00 I have not seen a PSU that can be bought for less thats any good . Does the CPU fan spin and stay running ?????? >>>>> it it does then the CPU self test is passing >>>> try the board with only stick of memory post back your troubleshooting results

joe he will not a decent power supply here for less than double that,it just cost me close on $300 for a silverstone
go here and check what the bios beeps are telling you is wrong www.bioscentral.com they will pinpoint the problem,thats what they are for

Thanks for the reply Joe, firstly yes the cpu fan spins and keeps spinning I, tried a sis6326 pci card in every slot, still no luck, tried a single ram stick in every slot, still nothing, one thing I did notice though is the intel chip on the motherboard gets extremely hot, so hot that you cant touch it, is this normal?

It isnt really doing any beep codes,only when I pull the ram and then start it but then it isnt a code it is beeping, it is just continual fast beeping as in 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1.

I have the same problem (Same motherboard), however it's only if I bank the ram together to run in Dual Channel Mode... (So running two identical ram sticks in ram slots 1 and 3 to go to dual channel mode).
I have a feeling it's because the video card to too crappy to support running the ram at dual channel. Have you tried running your ram in single channel mode? (Either take one stick out as suggested above, or read the manual for more info)... You probably havn't as you posted this in 2006 ... but if you had listened to linderman above you may have sorted this out :P |
