Problems with startup
Hi all,
I'm new here and before I begin I should just mention that I'm not very good with computers or similar. Some may even call me technologically inept when it comes to them. Earlier today, I have caused a major error in my laptop. I downloaded the sharepod program from my ipod on to the laptop and began to transfer the music from my ipod to the laptop. It seemed to be working fine for about two minutes then without warning it reset. I got this error when it started up again: We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If the previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally. Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start Windows Normally Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice. Seconds until Windows starts: # I've tried numerous times with each of the selections. Once selected, they take a few seconds, and the Windows Loading Page comes up. About twenty seconds in, it restarts itself again and brings up the same error. I'm completely at loss what to do. I've spoken to two friends of mine who know a little bit about computers and both seem to think it's definitely a hardware error and most likely caused by some kind of virus. I've never had a problem before with my laptop and the program I was using and had loaded was one I got from a friend who has used it on several different computers without any problems. Is there any advice anyone can give me to how I might go about getting my laptop to work again or even start up? Or should I just resign myself to taking it into the shop...? Nikki |

Try disabling automatic restart and see if it gives you a blue screen with an error message instead (post the message if it does). You could also try repair or recovery with an xp disk before having to reformat and reinstall windows. You could try and backup your data before doing anything but it takes a little knowledge and a second computer (which I assume you have since you are posting here).
