Often neglected question when buying laptop

Hi,

I just bought a new Dell laptop but I want to check the specs to be sure I really get I paid for.

It;s supposed to be 60GB but when I checked the harddisk it shows 51.1GB. Is this right?

How do I check for the other stuff:

CD Burner speed
Cache
Wireless specs
etc.

Thanks!

This is correct. This is a often misconception on advertised and actual disk size. 1GB is actually 1024MB. So you will loose about 1.5 gig from that. Then you will have the partition information and the MBR which will consume about 200MB. The rest of the unalocated amout will be the factory Dell recovery partition and utilities. If you look in Disk Management you will see a "Raw" partition that is unaccessible. This is the Dell utility partition.

thanks for the reply. My free disk space is only 44GB (new system, have not installed any s/w yet) although the system says 51GB and the seller said it;s 60GB. This is still OK, right? Thanks!

That's correct. Windows XP is software that is already installed on the harddisk and takes up space.
