Computer turning off - must hit the bottom to turn back on

I have an E-machine laptop (m5312) and recently it wouldnt turn on. I found that by banging the bottom of it, it would start, but would turn off after 30 seconds - 1 hour. The screen would simply go black (although the power button was still lit) and to turn it on again, I would have to turn off the power, rap it on the bottom, and power up again.

Any ideas?

I know it can be tempting sometimes but I would try and refrain from thwacking it I were you. [you'll probably make things worse]

May be an overheating problem; you could check if the fan is running ok....blow out any dust & hairs in there.

Well, I have to "whack" it just to get it to turn back on. I was forced to hit it a few times to get it running long enough to back up all my files, now its just sitting waiting for replacement parts.
