Acer Aspire 5630 - Freezes / Keyboard mouse stops responding

I've been trying to fix this laptop for a friend - basically it gradually freezes after a few minutes of use and eventually locks up completely.

My first thought must be that all the junk freeware and utils etc on it must be causing it, however it was going to be a huge task to identify and fix.

In the end I backed up and did a recovery using the Acer e-recovery util (hidden partition).

It's re-installed Windows XP MCE,and it seems to be back to default set up.

During first boot, it started running some Acer config program - whilst it did this I noticed the system time was wrong, so i double clicked the clock to change it, and the mouse froze.

I did ctrl+alt+del - taskman appeared, chose shutdown - computer froze.

I figured maybe it got confused whilst trying to configure stuff, so I powered down, rebooted and let it finish.

Once idle, i double clicked on the clock again, date and time properties appeared, but when i went to change the hour, it froze.

Although the mouse and keyboard don't work, it's worth noting that the clock still ticks!

I took the oppurtunity to try an external KB and mouse - plugged in my wireless set - Windows installed the drivers, and hey presto it's alive.

So maybe the laptop keyboard/mouse are failing? I'll search for some updated drivers...

In the meantime any ideas?
