Shutting down - close lid, good or bad?

When you are shutting down the computer and you shut the lid is this ok to do?

Will it damage it? Or it shut down properly? Or does that depend on what closing the lid means ie, go to hibernation, go to sleep?

I've never actually tried that, but I would assume that once you get it to start shutting down, shutting the lid (whatever setting it's on) shouldn't interrupt it.
