Help, unknown reconfig has occured
Hi all in a bit of a situation, let me explain.
Whilst cleaning my laptop keyboard I accidently flicked it on w/o realiseing and pushed an unknown set of keys that took me to a configuration window. I tried to navigate out of it but was forced to choose an option where it said it would partially reconfigure something, but leave everything intact (sorry that was vague I have forgotten the specifics now. Anyway apon boot up the laptop has gone bad. Initially certin programs wouldnt open and internet was extreamly slow. I downloaded a TCP/IP optimizer for this problem, and apon reboot all desktop icons have gone (but the files remain if you acsess them through the user HD. Many programs dont open, and I get a error message saying the desktop cannot be shown. Internet is still slow but wont open out of firefox. Also, my computer seems to have been set back to its settings about 2 months ago, for eg my login password changed to the old one, my Desktop, and a few recent downloads that had patches applied were gone. On another forum they are suggesting I do a partial or full system reboot. Does anyone have any suggestions or a confirmatio this is the best thing to do? Im running a HP Pavilion dv6000 Special Edition, btw. If anyone wants me to provide more info to help diagnose the problem just ask. Finnaly, if a full system reboot is needed how is that performed? And will it delete the operate system, because my laptop never came with the backup CD's for the OP.... Cheers Nick EDIT: The specific message that comes up in relation to the desktop is ; C:\Windows\system32\config\sytemprofile\Desktop is not accessible. Access is denied. Re: Help, unknown reconfig has occured
Try booting into safemode by tapping the f8 key during start up.
you should get a black screen with boot options. Move to the top of the screen and choose safemode and hit enter. Before it completes safemode startup it should ask if you want to use system restore instead (I think you need to click on 'no' to activate system restore but read the message carefully). When the system restore screen loads, choose a date from the calendar when the computer was last working normally. Hopefully this should work. You could could also try this from your desktop. right click on computer and select properties-then open system protection-click on the system restore button and again choose a date.
