Acer battery

There appears to be a general fault with Acer Aspires - that when the battery gets to about 3 years old - it fails catastrophically - causing the laptop to refuse to respond to keyboard and mouse inputs - the problem means that the laptop no longer works on battery power and I believe should be subject to a recall by Acer ?

Does it work if you replace the battery. Getting 3 years life on a battery is pretty good amount of time.

OK Got the thing working - but with the battery ACPI disabled (as suggested in a different forum) - This concerns me - what exactly does ACPI do ?
Am I running the risk of bursting in to flames for example - if the battery overcharges .....??
