Wireless Network Problem

Working with HP mini netbook running Windows XP Wireless Network configuration tool cannot find and list any wireless networks within range, and yet it says wireless networks are detetected. I can enter the specifics and cannect to my home network and connect... but it still comes up that it can find no wireless networks within range. There are no other configuaration utilities in the notebook and I've attempted the normal fixesn to reset and still no luck. Running some of my software, I know my home network is listed twice but when in the windows system to change the order of preferred networks none are listed. If I had any hair to pull out it I'd be bald, but fortunately its shaved tight. Anyone with suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

(computer is my son's on leave from Marine Corps so I only have a short period to work on this problem for him)
