laptop display broke, external monitor function key doesnt work?

Its an acer laptop, display is cracked. And all the other function keys seem to work okay. I have never used that function key before now so im not sure if it ever even worked. I can hold fn and hit the button a bunch of times and it never tries to do anything. Is there another way I can get it to work? I tried uninstalled video drivers and reinstalling them. The laptop came factory with vista on it, I took it off and put xp on it, I have read that a newer driver might cause it to not work. Im going to try some older drivers if I can find them. If not maybe a system restore to vista? Is there a way to set a differnt key to work it in vga? maybe alt + f5 or something of that sort. The laptop will work in vga mode on the external monitor but the resolution is set too low to be able to do anything without having to scroll all over the screen.

I had taken the laptop apart and put it back together, could I have left a cable unplugged that would cause it not to work? I'm pretty sure I plugged them all back up, the only thing I had trouble with was a white and black cable running from the display, I may have plugged them into the wrong spots, as they snap in place right next to each other. I figured they work the display anyways which is broke so it wouldnt make a big difference..
