My Laptop won't turn on - please help

Hi guys,

I've spent some time looking at this forum and seen that other people have had similar problems. I've tried all the things suggested in these threads but none have succeeded for me. Here's a diagnostic and a list of what I've tried.

Lenovo R61i won't power on.
Battery - tested on another machine, it's fine.
When plugged in light indicator does come.
I've made sure the RAM is ok.

Starting to think the problem is fairly serious. Most probably related to the Hard Drive or Motherboard.

I was wondering if anyone knows a good computer repair place in London. Ideally I would like the laptop fixed but would settle for data recovery too.

Any help is good
Cheers
Hayden

Hi and welcome to TSF this may help you in testing http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/aapsfaq.htm you can run a hdd diagnostic available from the hard drive makers site download and burn to disc use img burn http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download for that assuming you can get the pc to boot on ac power, for saving data you could use a usb enclosure and hook your drive to another computer and then tranfer your data or use a linux distro to boot from in live cd mode again assuming you can boot from ac power, have you tried a known good ac adapter for your model to see if it will boot

Re: My Laptop won't turn on - please help

Hi Joeten,

Thanks for replying to my thread.

I would definitely like to recover the data on my drive myself if it's not too hard. I had a similar problem (computer not turning on) with my PC a couple of years ago.

To solve it I put new HD in and set the old one as a slave. I could then access the data no problem. An I only had to pay for the new HD, which I kinda needed anyway. I suppose something like this is much harder with a laptop?

Anyway, back to the broken laptop. I can't get anything out of it. When I press power nothing happens. Not a thing. I've tried it with another battery that I know works, nothing. I've tried it with just the AC power in, and still nothing.

I know the AC cord and battery are ok because I have 2 of the same R61i - one that's working fine (which I'm on now) and the broken one which has died.

Cheers
Hayden

Hi this is just curiosity have you tried taking both the battery and ac out and holding the power button down for 30 sec,as to your data I mentioned a usb enclosure which will allow you to connect to another computer make sure you get the right one I imagine it will be a sata drive so look for one for that
