Laptop randomly turns off then tries to boot up again

My Sony Vaio Laptop (vgn-cr190) just started doing this recently.

It will randomly shut itself off, then it seems like it tries to start itself again but nothing happens (black screen). But the power button led light remains on as well as the wireless light. (no cpu light).

To power it back up I have to wait a few seconds or else it will just turn on, make a click noise, then try to power itself on again but go to a black screen.

The cpu temperature jumps from 52c to 67c randomly without any heavy usage. Oh, I also reinstalled vista using a partition on the drive hoping this would solve the problem. It didn't.

Any Ideas on what I can do to diagnose the problem?

Re: Laptop randomly turns off then tries to boot up again

During boot up, does it shows the OS logo like Windows XP or Windows Vista?? Prior to the problem occurred, do you recall any changes made to the computer like installing softwares or drivers or probably loading some updates??

That would help us isolate the problem..

For a diagnostic softwares for testing, you might want to check and download some hirenz boot cd.

Re: Laptop randomly turns off then tries to boot up again

It will boot up completely. I've checked for any programs using cpu % but there aren't any using a lot.

I didn't install anything recently that I can remember. At the time it was having problems installing an update for sql server 2005 and randomly decided it couldn't install some network packet thingy? (sorry I don't remember what it was since i've reinstalled everything). Don't have any of those issues now though.

One night it just decided to start freezing a lot. I'd have to reboot. Then the computer would lag a lot and eventually freeze again (+sound loop if a video was playing).

From what you've said, I think it could be either heat related, or the hard drive is flaking out and about to crash and burn. Go to Event Viewer (Start > type "eventvwr" in the search > Press enter when it comes up

On the left of the Event Viewer window, expand "Windows logs", then click on System. Look through for any system errors that could relate to this issue and paste them here.
