In all the years I've had this laptop, I've always had the power settings set up so that it would never hibernate or go into standby - I hate both. The battery died soon after I bought this in 2002, and I never bothered with getting another, so it's always plugged in and pretty much constantly on.
Last night, for the first time since i disabled standby all those years ago, it seemed to go into standby...but no amount of button pressing or mouse clicking would awaken it. I had to shut it off. It now seems to do this about five minutes after I power it up now - and booting up seems to take longer than normal. I've checked all the power settings and even changed it to "always on" rather than "laptop/portable" to no avail. Out of curiosity, I loaded up an hour's worth of mp3s in wmp, thinking that inactivity had something to do with it, but it must not. The display shuts off but the music keeps going. I have now discovered through playing around that doing a FN F8 will re-activate the display. The last time I did this, when the display turned on, it had a red hue to it that faded away after a few seconds. What is going on and how can I stop this? Re: Dell Inspiron 2650 display turns off without warning
That could be one of two things either your inverter for the lcd backlight is failing or the backlight itself is failing, you can most likely get the parts off of ebay, this is the link to the service manual for your laptop.
