Mistake Windows XP freezing whenever I restart cpu

I'm having a very wird problem with my computer lately. As soon as I restart the machine and log in, explorer seems to jam, displaying nothing more than the icons on the desktop. I can't press on anything, and task manager is inaccesable with ctrl+alt+delete. I tried pressing the icons on the desktop,at which point the mouse freezes and I have to restart windows, only to get the same result. I already tried using BIOS and selecting last know configuration, which was as worthless and trying another restart. Windows safe mode w/o networking does however seem to work, showing that there is no malware problem.

This is not the first time this happens on one of my machines and I'd be happy to get advice from someone who also had ths problem.

My computer is an
IBM t400 with a windows xp proffesional 5.1
System Model 281524U
BIOS version 1.00
3032 MB ram

and pretty much nothing else works in safe mode, so I ca't really get any other data. Be glad if anybody even knew this problem exists

Re: Windows XP freezing whenever I restart cpu

I made an image and burned it onto a CD. Am I suppose to put that into the computer as soon as it starts? and does the program tell you exactly what part of the system has failed and what can be done about it?

Re: Windows XP freezing whenever I restart cpu

I'm still having problems with that you suggested. I choose the option "for tekram&symbols controllers" and the screen freezes at "loading DFT."

BTW I had this problem on another computer, but there I didn't wait for answers, just reinstalled windows. I'm trying to update the drivers so ethernet and WLan can work, but it needs the windows service pack, which needs windows to be verified, which requires an internet connection from the computer, which leads to the first problem.

If anybody got a solution for either w/o buying another copy of windows, I'd be glad to hear it.

Re: Windows XP freezing whenever I restart cpu

yes, it is the one I downloaded. I tried using the program on another computer, and that time it worked, but didn't say anything important other than "test concluded sucesfully"

Re: Windows XP freezing whenever I restart cpu

if it will not work on your machine i would suspect the hard drive itself
