Re: Presario V6000 problem
0x7B: Could be a problem with the hard drive or your hard drive controller on your motherboard. 0xF4: A system thread terminated unexpectedly. It sounds to me like your hard drive is dying.
Do you have your installation CD or a recovery partition? Try disabling SATA native support, booting in safe mode, then follow these instructions: http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
Thanks for your response.
I have the installation cd but no recovery partition. When I turn native support off and try to boot in safe mode it boots up windows but within 5 secs it stalls and crashes to the F4 error. I have a spare HD if this may help to diagnose the problem. |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
Boot from the CD and press R when you have the choice to Repair. Once you get to the Recovery Console, run the command chkdsk /r /f. Let us know if it comes back with any errors.

Re: Presario V6000 problem
Chkdsk wouldn't run with 'chkdsk /r /f' but would with 'chkdsk /r'
It got to 75% then stopped and this message came up: The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems. |

Wipe the drive with KillDisk: www.killdisk.com You need ISO burning software and a blank CD/DVD in order to run it.If you need the software, I recommend ImgBurn: www.imgburn.com Wipe the drive with KillDisk and try reinstalling. If that doesn't work, the hard drive is dying/dead. |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
Killdisk stalled at 43% and it can't find my HD when I try to reinstall.
I have another HD that is in my other laptop. It works fine. I may put that into the presario and try to use killdisk and then install on that HD. Would there be any problems attempting this? |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
No, shouldn't be as long as it's the same type (could be SATA or IDE). As long as the ports match up, it should be okay.

Re: Presario V6000 problem
I put the other hd in the laptop and ran killdisk to wipe it. I then tried to install windows - I got as far as the screen that asks if u want to install or repair and when I chose install it went to a screen telling me it could not find the hard drive.
Seems odd if it can find it when running a boot disk to wipe it. Is this a bios problem? |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
I tried again to ensure that I did everything ok but the same thing happened. It can wipe the new HD but it can't write the OS to it. It couldn't wipe the old HD and couldn't write the OS to it.
I'm stumped!!! |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
I really do apologize that it took so long to reply. Have you checked to see if the original hard drive works in the other laptop?
It does seem like a BIOS or motherboard problem. |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
No problem, you've got a life to live before u help noobies like me first. Yes I tried the original hard drive in my other laptop and it works fine (installed a copy of windows no problem and runs ok).
There are updates for the BIOS but Ive been told that you can only update HP laptops bios via windows and not DOS. There is also an update for SATA drivers which I can put on a bootable disc however I have never updated a BIOS or drivers via a boot disc before so I'm a little wary as I can imagine. In fact Ive never created a boot disc before. One other thought - because it ran ok before and Ive not made any changes to the BIOS that I'm aware of - could it be the CMOS battery? Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate your help. |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
Looking at this: http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/t281590.html
It looks like the CMOS battery is not the problem. All that the CMOS battery does is save BIOS settings (system time, hardware settings, etc.) and shouldn't cause a problemwith the actual well-being of your machine, say an install. Based on everything I've seen, it appears to be something with the motherboard - be it the entire board or just the hard drive controller. Based on what I said initially: Quote:
I truly wish you the best of luck. Keep us informed if you do decide to bring it to a repair shop. |

Re: Presario V6000 problem
Thank you very much for your help. Agreed it looks like its the Motherboard. The Presario V6000 has a history of bad Motherboards as far as I can tell. Typically they had extended the warranty by a year because of problems but I missed that by a year :).
Again, many thanks for your help mate. |
