I Want my Tv to be my monitor

i have a dell inspiron 8600 and samsung 50 inch and i want to have the tv become my monitor, i have vga connections on both hardwares when i plug them in the correct spots nothing pops up on my destop to d/l drivers where do i go to obtain these?

You can select you external monitor port on your laptop by holding down your function key and normally tapping f5 but check your laptops manual.
