Re: No Power Dell Inspiron 5100
Does anything look broken ie. missing pin damaged laptop socket? If not disconnect battery and try giving the jack plug a wiggle at the laptop end and see if anything happens.

Re: No Power Dell Inspiron 5100
No broken pins. Wiggled charger connector with no change. I have dissassembled laptop and would like to know where to check for power to see if Motherboard is dead. Can I do this without removing board? Which connector and what voltage am I looking for?
Thanks, PHILLYGOAT |

Re: No Power Dell Inspiron 5100
Dude there is a huge number of laptops and motherboards out there, and without the service manual or mobo specs, you can appreciate that identifying test pins and jumpers is a minefield.
I'm assuming you have some kind of electrical/electronic knowledge. I am an electronics tech (indusrial) and fault finding on mobos is a nightmare. The first thing to do is get the mobo out and then eyeball it. What you are looking for is damaged, burnt out components, also cracked circuit board or broken conductor tracks. Some of the obvious things I have found have been dry solder joints. The SMT electrolytic capacitors, these are the largest capacitors on the board and look like little tin cans. These should have no signs of distortion or spliting. You can check it on the bench with the power supply on, and trace out the power supply circuit, checking voltages along its path. Good luck Dude.

Re: No Power Dell Inspiron 5100
Looks like work is going to replace the laptop. Now I have to decide whether to see if they will let me have the old one and buy a used motherboard to see if that will fix it.
Thanks for your help Night Shift. PHILLYGOAT |
