Re: Dell Laptop: Not loading Windows.
Download the ISO file for DELL diagnostic tests. Burn it on CD and run the selftest for the harddisk. If ok, download the diagnostic tool of the harddisk manufacturer and try again. If ok, dissassemble disk and make a backup of your files on different computer.
After backup, repair your windows installation using the Windows CD. |

Hi allI tried to re-install windows xp but kept getting ntldr is missing at startup. I managed to run the diagnostics and it bleeped at Hard Drive dst short status test error detected. unit 4 drive self test failted. It then booted the harware diagnostics and found the following errors ofoo 1344 msg blok 95631 uncorrectable data error; ofoo 133D msg IDE device failed incomplete cd for testing; ofoo 0244 msg block 95743 uncorrectable data or media is write protected and finally ide disk verify test came up with ofoo 1A44 95631 uncorrectable data error or media is write protected. I take it the hard drive is toast? The machine is a dell latitude d600 and an old works one of my husbands so maybe not worth replacing the hard drive if that's what's needed. Does anyone have any advise at all please? Thanks Bluefox |

Re: Dell Laptop: Not loading Windows.
Hard drives are not that expensive and well worth the upgrade of a failed drive. Check for prices on www.newegg.com

Case you can only upgrade to a bigger sized harddisk, check the revision number of your BIOS and see if it's older than the last DELL version. A newer BIOS usually allows bigger sized hard disks.
Don't touch the ole disk anymore, copy contents (if possible) through external USB once the new disk is up and running. Else use Partition Recovery to extract any readable files. Last edited by LaptopNomad; 10-25-2009 at 01:36 AM. |

Re: Dell Laptop: Not loading Windows.
Thanks for your help, I'll maybe check the prices of drives locally (UK) and check th bios to see if can upgrade at same time. Going by the error messages do you think the drive is the only problem and are they easy enough for a non techy to install?
Thanks again much appreciated Bluefox |
