Laptop sound stopped working

Hi, as of yesterday I can no longer get any sound from my HP Pavilion dv7 (OS Vista, service pack 2) laptop and was hoping someone here may be able to help me.

I don't know how much use or relevance this is, but when I press play on iTunes the song selected just stays at 0:00, so it doesn't even play with no sound, it just fails to play whereas youtube videos are just silent.

I've gone on Device manager -> Sound, vid.... and searched for updates and it says the latest drivers are installed.

Any help would be appreciated.
