My daughter's laptop sat unused for months because she couldn't get it to work right. Now I have it and it does not start. The battery and AC indicators do not light to show there is power. It does nothing when on battery power and the on button is pushed. When it's on AC power the battery and AC power indicators flash seven times and stop. Nothing else. I've removed and replaced the RAM, tried starting it without the battery in place, removed the hard drive, but still the same problem.
Motherboard? CMOS? Help! |

Re: Acer Aspire 3000 does not start
sounds like a power problem, nothing to do with cmos.
It could be that the battery needs replaced especially if it was left on standby or hibernate for months. Is it still under warranty? I would contact the place were you got it from and explain what has happend if it is.

Re: Acer Aspire 3000 does not start
Out of warranty. Wouldn't the AC indicator light be on when it's plugged in? Neither that nor the battery indicator are on. I had a similar problem with a Dell that was water damaged and they have a troubleshooting site that gave me instructions to determine the problem. Acer's site just offers a paid service. How can I find what the flash codes mean? In the meantime I'll find out where it was purchased and contact them.
Thanks. |

Re: Acer Aspire 3000 does not start
When I had this problem with a Dell, their site instructed me to turn on the computer while holding down certain keys and observing the number of LED flashes. Apparently this is an indicator code for hardware functionality like beep codes. I was hoping Acer had a similar service on their site, but they don't. They just want to charge for service plans that would probably just say, "Buy a new one!" Dell's site didn't solve the problem either, but it seemingly narrowed the problem down to a bad motherboard. In that case it was water damaged, so I believed their diagnosis. As far as I know there was never any damage to the Acer - it was just left unused for too long.

Re: Acer Aspire 3000 does not start
Okay, after reading other posts with similar problems I decided to play around with the AC adapter. I tried another one that I know works - no power at all. Then I plugged in the original again and jiggled the connection at the computer - the AC indicator light flashed dimly! I tried opening up the case, but there are just too many screws and when I thought they were all out, I still couldn't get the bottom to come off and I didn't want to force it. Any new ideas?
