[SOLVED] Acer 3610 if you pick it up screen goes black

I have worked on computers for years and my girlfriend is having a super weird problem with her Acer 3610.

When you pick the unit up the screen will go black but the unit stays on.

I have pluged a monitor up to the unit and that screen goes black as well so the bad news is it sounds like something is wrong with the video card so this would mean a motherboard replacement.

What does this sound like to you guys? Just looking for second opinions

i just find it super weird and have never seen this happen on any system not even on desktops. She said it has done it since she got it too bad she didnt take advantage of the manufacturer warranty.

Lots of possibilities - physical movement may cause that issue if the LCD x inverter cable is loose (see pics here; http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:...&ct=clnk&gl=ca ).

Re: Acer 3610 if you pick it up screen goes black

well i have a monitor plugged up to it though?

im thinking this is a onboard video issue b/c the power doesnt turn off

kinda sucks

i may look at the inverter connections to make sure though thanks

Re: Acer 3610 if you pick it up screen goes black

Monitor and LCD blanks out once laptop is moved? I am not sure if this is the same problem that IBM Thinkpads (T40, T41, T42...) had some time ago.. but with the Thinkpads (AFAIK and based on what I have read so far), it was because of a BGA problem (solder coming off) due to warping of the motherboard.

I suggest you open it up and check the video card (some laptops have them integrated on the mobo so you cannot swap them out) and swap them out with a good working one. If that would not solve the problem then you may need a mobo repair or replacement.

Re: Acer 3610 if you pick it up screen goes black

odd there was a ram module loose in one slot and we were only rocking 256 on xp which is bad so a friend had a 512 and we are using only it ddr2

i tried reseating the ram and that did not work the ram module was loose and tried both ram in one slot both ram are good turns out one slot is bad

so the 512 fixed the problem and im thinking even the loose ram wobbling around may have been causing a short and the screen to go out b/c it has not gone out since the chip has been taken out and only the one 512 used now the laptop runs like a dream

:)

Re: Acer 3610 if you pick it up screen goes black

Thanks for the update. I am glad to know that it was solved by the RAM and that you were able to pin down the failing slot.
