Acer TravelMate: blackscreen & long noise on bootup

Hi, I have a 3-year old Acer TravelMate 4150 unit. I left it at the care of my brother for 3 years when I went abroad for business reasons. When I got back, I am informed that my laptop was having a bad problem. So I went to see what exactly the problem was and it's ear-deafening:

After a few seconds when turned on, all I see is a blank black screen and a high pitched continuous noise can be heard from both speakers. So I turned off the unit and tried running it on AC power but still the symptoms persist.

Now the last thing before it suddenly "died" was that my little sister was just playing games on it(safe ones like hangaroo and barbie online). So I'm pretty sure it ain't here fault.

Any ideas what happened to my laptop? Thanks in advance.

Re: Acer TravelMate: blackscreen & long noise on bootup

This could be a number of issues.

First off remove the battery and hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds. The plug in the ac adapter and try again.

If this fails you want to reseat your Ram undo the cover underneath take out each ram module and reinsert but reinsert in the other slot. If 2 ram modules are installed swap them around and try again.

Still not cured. It now sounds like you have a faulty motherboard and the only thing I can suggest ps a new laptop sorry

Re: Acer TravelMate: blackscreen & long noise on bootup

I would test the Ac adapter or try using another one. Just make sure the voltage is the same as what the computer requires.

If the adapter is ok. Then next thing I would do is unplug the keyboard and power it on see if it makes the same noise.

Re: Acer TravelMate: blackscreen & long noise on bootup

This continuous noise you hear could be two things:

1. That one or two RAM modules have failed, so do as Soccomm says, swap them around the RAM slots one at a time.

2. This could also be indicative of graphic chip set failure, a little less rarer but possible.

If swapping the RAM around don't help, try and borrow or buy some new RAM.

Okay, will try swapping the ram. I recall it only had 1 2gig RAM installed. Will post back the results.

Re: Acer TravelMate: blackscreen & long noise on bootup

I tried Soccomm's advice and sadly it didn't work on my laptop.

But I'm gonna try night_shift's advice of borrowing RAM from another lappy and hope for the best.

Dude before you borrow and fit the RAM make sure its compatible with your laptop. All RAM is not the Same!

Hey,

It used to work.. then it started restarting whilst booting into windows... now I just have a blank screen with a deafening high pitch noise!

Thanks,

Re: Acer TravelMate: blackscreen & long noise on bootup

I have a feeling that the problem we're experiencing is either CPU or motherboard related... I think one of them has developed a fault =/
