1 Beyond laptop DVD drive not working

I have a 1 Beyond 3215m laptop, Windows Vista OS, with a DVD drive (Matshita DVD-RAM UJ870PC) which has stopped working. This might dictate I send the laptop in for servicing, but the computer was set up for two different users (administrator and limited user); the limited user can still access/read and write CDs from the DVD drive (not interested in making DVDs yet). The administrator can load a CD but the drive only makes whirring noise, and does not recognize the disc. I get a message that says something like "install a writable disc." To be honest, when I got the laptop it had several Trojan viruses on it, but two weeks worth of scanning and quarantines has seemed to clean it. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Please speak slowly I am not a computer tech just someone trying to fix the problem that was left behind. BTW, I've gotten no response from 1 Beyond. Thanks.

Re: 1 Beyond laptop DVD drive not working

I had an Acer with Matshita UJ 87*** drive and it stopped working after a year and a half. Similar symptoms. I tried latest drivers but this did not help. I replaced it with a cheap LG drive, never had any problems again.

Matshita is a cheap drive manufactured by Panasonic.
