ALPs Touchpad
I have a Dell Latitude C840 that has a stick and touch pad, neither of which seem to work. I connect a USB mouse to the USB port to move the cursor. I can't remember when it stopped working, but I need it to work now and I can't get it to 'budge'. I also have a PS/2 mouse which also works.
I have installed the appropriate driver; my Device Manager tells me that it the Alps touchpad is installed and working properly but it won't budge when I try to move it (neither does the stick). All my other Dell laptops have touchpads that work with the Alps driver. Any help/direction. Thanks |

Re: ALPs Touchpad
Most laptops (Dell included), have an application package installed which controls laptop specific features (such as touch pad and stick). Ensure it is enabled.

Re: ALPs Touchpad
I have that software/drivers installed. The Device Manager tells me it is working properly, yet, nothing moves when I slide my finger over the pad or move the stick.
I am at a loss for what I can do about this. but thanks for your effort. |

Re: ALPs Touchpad
Have you verified the pad is active in the software? There's more to it than just installing the software. The software has options to enable/disable the various hardware, as well as configuration options for how it is used.

Re: ALPs Touchpad
Sorry about the basic questions, but how do I verify that the pad is active?
I have viewed the software options, but I have not found anything that indicates an active/inactive pad. All I have done was to verify that the Device Manager recognizes that the device has a driver that works. Give me a little push in the right direction. thanks again. |

Re: ALPs Touchpad
Looks like they've changed things a bit. According to the user manual, the touch pad and stick are configured using the Mouse Properties.

Re: ALPs Touchpad
The 'Mouse Properties' show the Alps touchpad being installed; the properties of the 'pad' gives me the same display I get when I go to the Device Manager, namely that the device is working properly. If I update the driver, I am 'told' that what I have installed is better than anything else they can find.
What has to be done to 'configure/activate the pad? |

Re: ALPs Touchpad
According to the user manual for your laptop, it simply states that it can be enabled/disabled and configured to your preferences via the Mouse Properties.
All of the Dell laptops that I've used, have a separate Dell application for also controlling these functions. It shows up under programs and usually has an icon in the task bar.

Re: ALPs Touchpad
Try downloading the latest software/drivers from Dell. Then uninstall your current "ALPS" driver, and install the new drivers.

Re: ALPs Touchpad
My BIOS is pointing to 'Touch Pad/PS-2 Mouse. I have installed the softtware 'fresh'. I have the ALPS touchpad icon displayed at the bottom right of the screen (task bar).
My Mouse Properties shows that the ALPS mouse is there, but I have no 'configure option that I didn't have with the mouse. I do have a USB mouse installed and working; that is what I have to use to get things moving on the screen. |

Re: ALPs Touchpad
I'm out of ideas. If I had to guess, I'd say it likely needs to be replaced.
Maybe someone else will have a better idea, and this likely needs to be moved to the laptop forum.
