[SOLVED] Replacing mobo what to have ready?
I'll be getting my used mobo tomorrow or the next day. I wonder if I will need BIOS, or anything else?
I know or have read that you need it when you install a new mobo but since this is used maybe not. The seller says I should be able to install it in the case as is and run. This is a Satellite A135-S4656. I've got all the parts, I'm just changing out the mobo |

Re: Replacing mobo what to have ready?
Kinda hard to say. Just make sure you practice good anti electrostatic discharge methods. Touch the case before and often or use wrist strap when handling components. Use good thermal compound (Arctic Silver 5) when installing cpu. As far as the BIOS goes, gotta see if there is a problem before troubleshooting.
List complete system specs. including make/model of components if you are nervous about compatibility issues.

I am assuming he is switching out his current laptop board...which is also hopefully a toshiba, as otherwise the LCD connector for the ribbon cable might not be compliant.... I assume it will come with a bios. You may need to flash it to the latest version if some features require it. It all REALLY REALLY depends. @ OP: If I have MISUNDERSTOOD what you are trying to accomplish, please correct me as needed. Also a listing of your current model/chassis would be benefitial.

Re: Replacing mobo what to have ready?
The boards are an exact match Toshiba K000045820 from the same model. The one I'm getting has the cpu, fan and heatsink, modem and wifi, all on it. So it literally will be able to take it out of the box and put it in the case. I just started to get paranoid as I do when important things get close I rehash in a OCD kind of way to be sure I've got everything.
In the middle of that I remembered something I read somewhere about new desktop mobo's and BIOS installation. I was hoping to download what I need tonight and put it on a disc to install if I needed it. Last edited by win98forever; 10-07-2009 at 08:09 PM. |

Re: Replacing mobo what to have ready?
Sorry I didn't catch the fact that it is a laptop. Wrong section, but no matter. You will need to run a repair install with the os disk in order to rebuild the HAL. BIOS flash may or may not be necessay.

Re: Replacing mobo what to have ready?
Sorry for the wrong section I figured mobo is a mobo. What section should I have posted in? Laptops maybe?:-0
I'll let you guys know as soon as I install it and try to run it. I have the OEM hard drive in an external at the moment I didn't lose any data, will I still have to run repair install? I guess I'll find out as soon as I turn it on. If I do have to run the repair install, how is that done? I have the Toshiba discs 3 sets even! I ordered them twice until I figured out it was a bad dvd drive. :-p |

I have it in w/o all the screws yet. I powered it up and it doesn't show anything.
I have yet to install the HD but the previous one at least boot into BIOS w/o the HD As I write I learn, I think and I've figured I need to put the hd in. Ok I've got the HD, RAM installed and its doing nothing. The fan is on the power light is lit but thats all I can see. I don't hear the HD spinning Look at that I was running with the power cord andno battery then I slipped the battery in and the screen came on instantly. There4 was Toshiba and then it booted into the repair or normal startuip screen. Very quick, I like it. It's running through startup repair, so it was probably trying the whole time the screen was black. I'll update when startup repair is done. It's running. startup repair didn't work. I eneded up restarting and the sign in screen came up then on to desktop. The time in an external didn't change much, the icons were huge and the recycle bin was corrupted. Seems ok I'll try more tomorrow. Good Morning I'm downloading updates and running backup as I post. For some reason I could not connect with the ethernet port. I think my ethernet cable is bad on one end I'll replace it or fix it but It always worked in the other machine if it did need some jiggling ocasionally. It only connected for a couple seconds on this machine so I can't definitively say it's a bad port. Otherwise the machine is as it always was from what I can tell. I think I'm done here. I don't know if I should keep this open until I confirm the ethernet port works or just start a new thread if it has a problem. New thing; I was setting internet properties as the machine is installing download 1 of 30 and doing backup, and I clicked delete browseing history on exit and then clicked on default search provider and the screen went black then came back up with everything onscreen in giant size. I checked my setting and it's at 96DPI. It has gone black during this typeing and is flickering as I hit each key. Is that bad video? am I doing too much? Ok maybe someone who knows better should tell me what question to ask first. I am editing and it is flickering very badly on every command, keystroke or scroll, especially scroll. ![]() I went into display setting again and was able to change resolution I'm now at 1280x800 any lower was too fuzzy around the edges this is sharp. I'm going to leave this open since I may get more little problems like this. Backup has stopped 2/3 through and is not requesting a new disc? In this edit screen the emoticons are flickering very annoyingly, Last edited by dai; 10-10-2009 at 10:47 AM. |

Re: Replacing mobo what to have ready?
I suppose a moderator is combining my posts into one? The above post is actually about 5 posts.
Ok it restarted after update and the backup didn't ask me to complete backup. I was judgeing completness by the green bar in the window. I'll probably backup again today just to be sure. It's been running well except for a problem with media player going off then refusing to open the radio station I had been listening to when it went off. The first time was when I clicked a Media Player link to get the station I was listening to. It refused to reconnect after the cutout. The second time after I got the same station by clicking; File/openurl it cut out and refused to reconnect using either method. I updated BIOS and that seems to have fixed this problem. It doesn't make sense to me but it's been working fine since. I think this is done, I don't know that a techy will think there is much help in it I do think a novice will gain coinfidence from reading how another semi novice did it.
