XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
Everything on the machine is working great, actually quite a fast machine.
One issue remains, the USB. When I plug a device in such as a USB thumb drive, it detects the drive, advises it is installed and ready for use however when I go to windows explore I cannot see anything on the drive. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
When I go to disk management, I see the hard drive and the cd but not the usb drive. Also, I tried to format it and nothing happens.

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
No conflicts that I can see, I just loaded xp on this machine and you can scroll down a little and see what I've been going through.
What exactly are you wanting to see in disk manager?

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
Now when I click to remove the device it is saying the device can't be stopped, try later.

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
I uninstalled all the usb entry in device manager, windows xp sp3 installed all the drivers back. When I plug in a usb drive, it tells me to reboot for it to work. If I leave the drive plugged in, the computer will not boot past bios screen. During this time I noticed the light within the cruzer usb drive goes from bright to dim returning to bright, up and down. If I pull out the drive the computer boots normally. What am I missing?

Problems with USB
I have reloaded XP three times on this gateway mx8734 vista xp downgrade in hopes the order I was installing drivers might make a difference. The USB's sometimes recognize a usb memory stick (sometimes not) but even when detected, maufacturer stated and all, when I go to windows explore nothing is seen. Does anyone have an idea on anything I can check?

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
Hi
I have merged your post seeing they are related to your issue (USB) I will aslo attach the thread for others to view when we downgraded this laptop from Vista to XP: [SOLVED] XP on Gateway MX8734 I noticed you stated in the above thread you had to do a reinstall because you forgot to install the Chipset driver. Is this the one you installed? http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...18052&lang=eng I assisted you with some of the drivers, (Chipset, Video, Ethernet Controller, Modem device on HD Audio Bus, Network Controller) but not all. Can you post the list of drivers that you have installed that I did not assist you with (Audio, Card Reader, Touch pad)? I do not believe they are related to your USB issue, but they may. If you attempted to install numerous drivers when you tried to get a device to work did you remove the "old" drivers first. Traces of bad installs (drivers) can cause issues. Does the USB ports work with other devcies (other than this flash drive)? What is the make and model of the printer? What errors do you have when you try to install the printer? Bill |

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
I start with this:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...18052&lang=eng infinst911autol.exe Interesting note here: **Important** The Intel Chipset Device Software provides functionality for AGP and USB, not drivers for AGP or USB. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UTILITY IF YOUR DEVICE MANUFACTURER IS RECOMMENDING IT TO CORRECT AN "AGP DRIVER," "AGP GART," OR "USB DRIVER" ISSUE; IT WILL NOT CORRECT YOUR ISSUE. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...16835&lang=eng Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows* XP (exe) winxp_14324.exe http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=247329721 Media Card Reader D20003-003-001 http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=247329583 Motorola Modem Driver D20005-002-001 http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...x?DwnldID=4275 Ethernet Adapter PRO2KXP_v14_0.exe http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...17751&lang=eng Wireless Lan: Intel 3945ABG Wireless LAN ICS_Dx32.exe http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=247329790 TI Media Card Reader D20009-000-001 http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=247329196 Sigmatel Audio Driver D20023-002-001 http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=247328772 Touch Pad Driver D20023-002-001.exe I have tried three different flash drives, there are four usb ports, symptoms vary by port. Some times it will say recognized the drive, installing and ready but when I check in windows explore noting there. Sometimes it will say device not recognized and sometimes it will lock up the machine and a couple of times bsod and reboot. The printer is a HP 6800 which is identified when I plug it in however after letting it install drivers it will just say "Device may not work properly" Bill, I am trying to be as complete as possible. Bill

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
One other item of interest, when I try to run driver detective (already paid for) I get an error and it will not let me update anything. This is the only program I have had any problems with thus far.

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
HI,
The only driver I "see" that may cause issues is the Audio Driver (Vista). If you have no sound issues I would leave it alone for now. As far as the USB devices Disconnect any USB devices you may have attached Go to the Device Manager Uninstall ALL the devices you see listed under USB If windows prompts you to restart the computer select CANCEL until ALL USB devices are uninstalled. Reboot the computer Allow windows to reinstall the drivers Connect the USB device and see if windows will configure it. Bill |

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
I have remove the usb devices several times and it does not correct the problem. It is like the computer cannot properly communicate with devices. I have an external usb mouse on it right now and works fine. I will uninstall the audio if you think that may help. Again, the com[uter sees the device such as a usb drive but cannot read what is on it and trying different usb ports results in the computer rebooting.

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
Hi,
Enter the BIOS and (usually under the Advanced settings), see if the BIOS is set to Auto for IRQ Assignments. Can I get a Full Everest Report from this XP Install? Thanks, Bill |

Re: XP on Gateway MX8734 One More Issue
Even under advanced this bios setup does not show IRQ info or selection, very abreviated setup. I donloaded everest and get "i945GM/PM Calistoga Chipset is not supported by this version of everest submit to get it included in later release.
My gosh this is getting to be a pain, I keep thinking something really basic was missed/incorrect when setting it up. I did delete the audio driver, no change except windows trys to install and gives me the old this device may not work correctly and when I plug in a usb drive it locks up the computer.

Try the trial edition here:
http://www.lavalys.com/products.php?...lid=35&lang=en Is the computer fully updated with MS Updates? What is your IE version (IE6, IE7, IE8)? Bill |
