[SOLVED] Laptop won't power up after letting battery die, then recharging

Hi,

My granddaughter has a Toshiba laptop with Vista. She says that her brother turned off her computer without shutting it down and she could not get it to start after that. She tried letting the battery die all the way down and then recharged it. The green light shows that it is fully recharged. Nothing happens when she hits the power button. She called me to ask for help since I have been able to help in other computer areas. But, I have never had a laptop so I don't know much about them. I told her to try holding down the power button longer, but that didn't work. Sometimes she gets a blank screen with a white dot at the top (I expect she means the cursor) but it doesn't power up. Or nothing happens at all when she tries to start it.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Gail

Re: Laptop won't power up after letting battery die, then recharging

What model of toshiba is it?

also try having her take out the battery, unplug the ac adapter from the laptop, then hold the power button down for 30 seconds, plug only the ac adapter back in and see if she gets any video.

But you also said sometimes she gets a black screen with a white dot? am guessing she means a blinking cursor. Does she see the toshiba logo screen before she sees that?

Also, to be a little more clear on terms being used, does it power on? when she presses the power button does the power light come on? does she see the toshiba logo screen and then it goes to a black screen and it doesn't boot into windows?

Or do no lights come on at all when she presses the power button?

Re: Laptop won't power up after letting battery die, then recharging

Problem Solved! I took the battery out and was able to power up using only cord. Then I reinserted the battery and it still worked.

Thanks for responding.
