[SOLVED] Media State Media Disconnected

Hello, I have googled this problem for a few days now and nothing has matched/fixed my issue so the majority of posts that was fixed for this were actually here. So here i am! :)

Background/Issue:
Okay so my brother gave me his 7 year old Laptop a few days ago, It is a Dell Inspiron 4100 and hasn't been used for years. After getting it i reformatted it with Win XP Pro x32, Right off the bat the Internet isn't working. It shows my Local Area Connection and IS connected by an Ethernet cord from it to my router (I have tried straight into the modem as well) BUT the LAC always says "Network Cable Unplugged" I have updated it to the latest version and have uninstalled it/reinstalled. The funny thing is i am not even trying to go wireless... So far every post that is around this problem the people are wireless. I have also used different Ethernet cords.

ipconfig/renew:
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.

ipconfig/all:
Windows IP Configuration

Hostname: --------------
Primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State: Media Disconnected
Description: 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible)
Physical Address: 00-06-5B-36-7F-FE

Some random info:
The router light for my laptop doesn't come on

I CAN ping 127.0.0.1

I CANNOT ping anything on the internet

I CANNOT ping my router

I have a Desktop connected to my router just fine (WIRED)

My mom has a Laptop connected to the router downstairs (WIRELESS)

Network Adapater:
3Com 3c920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible)

It also shows just fine in the Device Manager!

NOTE: In the Device Manager it shows my PCI Modem as a ? and an !. I have tried to update the drivers for this BUT it may be missing from the laptop. But as far as i know the PCI Modem is literally just for modem right? 56k?

Thanks for any help i can get, I am finally a full fledged nerd with more then 1 computer and would love to be able to use them both on the internet!

My System

Re: Media State Media Disconnected

try using a different network cable, you could try the one connected to the desktop if its reachable. The cable your using could be bad, or it could be a crossover cable, which won't work with what your trying to do.

Also, when the cable is plugged in, do you see any lights on the LAN port itself?

and yeah, PCI modem is normally just the dial-up modem. but you said you have a ? and ! in device manager? do both of them say PCI modem?

Edit: FYI, a true nerd would have a USB powered missle launcher firing rockets at his other computer, lol, those are so cool, lol.
