my nc6220 overheats, not the cpu

ok so i got the laptop from a friend, he told me that he took it to best buy. they told him that it was the cpu and that they would fix it for $400. he just ended up buying a new one and gave the laptop to me. i opened the laptop and took the fan and heatsink off to replace the thermal paste, i also bought a new fan.
i turned the laptop on and checked the cpu temperature it run at 25 degrees c. after 30 min the laptop crashes and the monitor goes crazy. i took of the keyboard and noticed that the cpu doesnt get hot its the thing next to it. i dont know what it is, i attached a pic of it. i left the laptop running last night for more than 15 hours right next to a fan and it dint crash, but 30 min after i removed the fan it crashed.

anyone know what other thing is?

Re: my nc6220 overheats, not the cpu

kinda solved. i decided to open up the laptop to be able to remove that part. it turns out that it looks just like a heatsink and it has thermal paste. i just cleaned of the old thermal paste and replaced it some some new one, now it runs for 3 hours but still crashes. might be because i used some cheap thermal paste that i bought at radio shack what do u think?
