DVD drive not fully working - Software/Technical problem ?
The DVD drive in my laptop is not working. When I insert a dvd, it kind of makes some noise, and the cursor shows signs it's working but then, when I open my computer, there's no icon to show that it has read the dvd and asks me to insert one when I try to open it.
However, when i tried to run a dual-layer DVD on my laptop (which I bought in 2007), the DVD's special icon appeared on my computer, but still it cannot play the dvd. IS this a technical fault or does it have something to do with the registry/software ? Also, if I have it replaced at a computer store, how much time would it take to get it repaired and how much would it cost ? Thanks |

Re: DVD drive not fully working - Software/Technical problem ?
easist way to see if the drive is failing or not, is try and boot from it. you can use a diagnostic test cd, recovery cd, live OS cd, anything bootable. If it boots to it, but doesn't read it in windows, then it should be a software problem. If it doesn't boot, then you need a new drive.
As for cost and time, it depends on the brand and model of the laptop, most dvd drives only take about 5 minutes to replace and some are customer replaceable units, very easy for you to do yourself. Cost wise, dvd drives range from $50 to over $150, just depends on what you get and where you get it. |

Re: DVD drive not fully working - Software/Technical problem ?
you can click a link in my signature for a diagnostic tool image, you can burn the image to a cd and it will be bootable. Memtest86+ is probably the best one as its very small, so won't take long to download or to burn it to a cd.
As for the maximum amount of time. HP's are usually really easy, take one screw out, pull the drive out, swap over the mount, put it back in, put the screw in, and your done. If your not comfortable taking it in, you really can do this yourself. Go here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/m...45711&lang=en& click on the Maintenance and Service Manual. Click on Removal and Replacement > Component Replacement > Optical Drive, good instructions and pictures. maybe take you 10 minutes, you'll only need a small phillips screwdriver. |
